Everyone is getting carried away here, but I would have thought any news bulletin before 5.30pm would be too early.
12.30 - ITV Lunchtime News
13.30 - ITV Day
15.00 - CITV
17.00 - Paul O'Grady / Des and Mel
18.00 - Regional News
18.30 - ITV Evening News
19.30 - Emmerdale
20.00 - Coronation Street / Regional Programming
21.00 - Drama / Film / Tonight ( with Tonight, a film or drama would follow at 22.00)
then
a short news programme.
Just drop the late bulletin - lets face it - it is never going to do as well as the late BBC programmes. How about 60 second news updates at 20.00, 21.00, 22.00, 23.00, and then fit a short 10 minute news programme whenever the late film / drama finishes ? Extend the Evening News - it is already the flagship programme. I think the current schedule up until 19.00 is fine, and an Evening news at 18.00 would struggle against the Six, but if they have an hour - long, decent programme at 18.30, I'm sure it could do better.

90 minutes of News starts at 6pm, beginning with a 30 minute Regional bulletin, followed by an hour-long, in-depth National summary.
Coronation Street and Emmerdale are slashed back to 2/3 times a week. Corrie airs Mon/Wed, Emmerdale Tues/Thurs, Friday slot varies depending on which soap has a bigger week in terms of storylines. I think this is one of the most important changes needed at ITV.
The 8pm hour is split into two
every
night. This would be the home of shows such as 'Tonight' and other Lifestyle shows that would be commissioned, similar to what you'd see on Channel 4.
At 9pm we start seeing the lengthy dramas, films and documentarys. Drama premieres on Monday and Wendesday at 9pm are one-hour. The Bill airs on Tuesday at 9pm, once a week. A weekly documentary on Thursday airs at 9pm. 9 o'clock Films air on Friday. At 10pm, more serious dramas/documentaries air. Can show more sex/violence/language.
The rest of the schedule remains the same, ie the 1 hour lunchtime News and ITV Day.
