Sorry about this but the forum seemed to stop responding half way through me posting a new thread, so I reposted, so now there are two threads! Please delete this one, thanks.

Grr... Smile

Anyway, as I was saying:

Good news Smile ITV1's 16 regions will be available to EVERYONE! It will also be broadcast on Astra 2D (which you all know), in FTA (not FTV!) Therefore, all viewers will be able to pick whichever region they want via Add Channels!

This extract is from DigitalSpy:

Quote:
All sixteen regional variations of ITV1 will launch on Sky Digital in November, according to a report in the Financial Times today.

Up until now, the network has been in dispute with BSkyB over a price for conditional access to the channel, which allocates each viewer the channel for their region. BSkyB was said to be demanding £20m to use the service, whilst ITV was only prepared to pay £5m.

In the face of falling audiences, and increased pressure from advertisers to launch on the platform, ITV is said to be 'fed up' of negotiating with the broadcaster, and will instead go it alone, broadcasting without conditional access direct to dishes via Astra.

The move means that ITV1 will also be available in several Northern European countries; which has required extensive negotiations with programme producers to acquire permission.

Champions League matches will not be broadcast via DSat, however, as the rights holders are unwilling to allow for them to be transmitted free-to-air.

So, apart from the Champions League matches, which you will still need to go to Analogue ITV1 to see, all programmes on ITV1 (Analogue) will be broadcast on Sky Digital!

ITV1's speculated launch date is 26th November 2001.

So, what do ppl think we'll get then when the champions league's on?!

I think there will be a splash on the ITV channel saying 'Champions League coverage in progress, tune into ITV1 through your aerial to see it'.

Note though, that if Sky don't grant ITV the conditional access rights, then yes, all regions will be openly available, but your default region won't be on 103 as the box won't know what region you're supposed to be getting, so you'll have to go through Services, Other Channels, ITV (Region), just to get to ITV1 in the first place!

As I understand it, and as I stated on the TV Ark forum, an EPG entry costs only around 20 grand per channel as opposed to the 20 million total that Sky are demanding. It seems likely that ITV will pay for this only, and either

a) have a 'generic' ITV1 on 103, and the regions on 900+;

b) have Carlton London/LWT on 103, and the regions on 900+;

c) do something similar to C4/S4C and shift the channels round depending on what region you are in. So your ITV station will be on 103 and the rest are on 900+.

d) They might even dispense with the 900+, and you'll get your region on 103 and have to manually tune your box (or use an FTA receiver) to get the other regions.

I have a feeling that (d) will be the same price as (a) or (b) as the fact that there'll be a bit of regional separation in the EPG will be balanced by the fact that they'll only be using one channel number. So I think that's what'll happen, ITV will pay Sky about 300 grand a year for the EPG entry on 103 and everyone will be happy. Most people won't even bother changing region, ITV will save money, Sky will get ITV on their platform and we'll get to see other regions. I'm pretty sure that's what will happen.

BTW it is not true that say Grampian can't broadcast outside the North of Scotland. They have their ITC licence and hence, subject to programme licencing (which IV are working on) can do what they like on satellite. They could open up a channel dedicated to nothing but North Scotland regional TV Shocked and it'd be perfectly legal.

Ooooooh interesting!!!!!!

If we get all channels for the time being it might be quite interesting. I would certainly go to the effort of finding them all.

Would this include STV????

Of course, with Carlton & Granada's near stranglehold on the network, it won't be long before it's all one channel anyway.

What about Channel TV? Channel is the 14:9 to the UK and France (eg,in between) So you get French Programs in the
Morning!

It would be good for the TV Room-He can finally put a name to the presenters!
