I read some time ago that they really had no idea what was in the Central archives or not, and in what condition it was in. It would be some job for someone to try to find the old Crossroads.

That WAS a while back. Since then, afaik every existing episode has been catalogued and copied to a modern format (or at least, that process is in progress). They now know exactly what does and doesn't exist, and it could be transmitted again should anyone wish to do so.

Also, don't forget when it was on satellite a few years ago, they only showed the last few - they didn't go far back.

But that was quite a few years ago (when they started at least). They went back to January 1982 (when Central started) because they definately knew that all the Central episodes existed, and didn't at the time know about which ATV episodes didn't and didn't exist. There is nothing to say that they could have gone back to somewhere in the 70's, they just didn't know whether they could without any gaps. Now they do, and it's ironic (and sad) that just as ATV era Crossroads is once again in a fit state to be retransmitted, no one seems to be interested in showing it.

Yeah, it would be wonderful to see the superb performances given by Sam Kidd, and also, who would ever forget the masterful interpretation of the character named Benny.

Anyone know where they could theorectically start a rerun of Crossroads from, assuming all episodes transfer OK ?

Doesn't it also affect Corrie too, because it only started PLUS reruns at 1976(Elsie Tanner returning from marriage to Alan Howard).

It has been mentioned on another thread that this point is where Granada was selling episodes on a transmissable modern format(1 inch maybe. Please correct if I'm wrong).

What happened when SKY Soap showed early episodes of Emmerdale Farm? Did YTV supply a complete run on 1 inch too? I never saw the early episodes, or SKY Soap on a regular basis, so I don't know.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the ATV episodes (what remains of them) were in London and that the Central episodes were in Nottingham, where they now live with the 418 Carlton episodes.

I presume that the ATV eps have now joined their Central counterparts at Lenton Lane then?

I've nothing against it seeing the light of day again. In fact, I'd be very curious to see it. But surely it should be on non-analogue-terrestrial channel "Plus" (formerly "Granada Plus" )????

Yes, ITV1 does show repeats of series, but Crossroads Mk1 (by virtue of the fact that it was a soap opera) ran constantly for many years, right? That means it would take quite some repeating!

Yes, I realise they could just repeat a little bit, but by virtue of the ongoing nature of soap plots (as opposed to purely self-contained episodes or small number of episodes), it would be hard to define a good stopping point for a small chunk of repeats.

"Plus" (or whatever) could repeat the whole however-many-years-it-ran-for run, over a long period (like UK Gold do with Doctor Who). Perhaps the only available slot for any such repeats on ITV1 would be either 1700-1730 or 1730-1800. But, as Mk2 and Mk3 didn't do very well in these slots, there seems little point in ITV1 trying Mk1 in this slot.

I'd assume they are in Nottingham now. The additional complication at the time was that ATV's programme archive was in the ownership of Polygram (where it was treated very badly - which is why the surviving episodes had to be recatalogued), and thus, bizarrely as it may seem, was separate from Central. So for 1981 episodes of Crossroads you'd have to deal with Polygram, and for 1982 Carlton. This of course didn't help any considerations into whether they could start any earlier than they did.

I think in theory ITV could start repeating Crossroads from 1981-1988 as that is the first point I assume almost all the eps are still available as UK Gold showed them not so long ago.

But ITV could repeat the 320 eps from Crossroads 2001-2002 in a lunchtime slot - im sure people would love to see those eps with Kate, Jake, Tracey and the original Scott

I remember Crosssroads being shown very early on UK Gold a few years back - from what I re-call they started showing it from the early 80's possibly 1981. The ATV endcap was seen for some of the episodes before the original Central endcap.

It was still with the original theme.

It was probably still all 1982 Central episodes though. A lot of programmes had allready been made with an ATV endcap (and frontcap) despite their not being intended to be shown until 1982 when the Central name had been introduced. The transmission copy of such programmes would (except for schools programmes) be re-edited to carry Central branding, but the archive master would probably not. Thus, even though you were watching what was officially a Central episode, it was made at the end of 1981 and thus came with an ATV endcap.

I don't think Corrie is affected by missing epsiodes. Granada had a No Junking policy in the 1960s, therefore most (if not all) epsiodes of the street survive. The reason plus started from 1976 is they do not all survive on a modern format- Prior to April 1976 they were all stored either on film or 2" quad- the BFI are/were in the process of transfering allt hese epsiodes over to a modern format.

The reason for April 1976 is the because in the 80s, Granada started selling the show abroad, and decided to start from April 1976, so transfered the epsidoes from that point from 2" onto 1". When Granada Plus launched in 1996, they had to start from that point as most episodes prior to that were at that time on obsolete tapes. (though some weren't as in the early days, G+ used to run Corrie Specials on Saturday afternoons, much in the same way UK Gold ran EastEnders exits last week).

The first UK Gold tx was Mon 04 Nov 96, which was originally tx on Thu 03 Dec 81, 13 episodes after the fire, and 13 episodes before Central began.

I do know that by January 1999 UK Gold were in 1985, as that's when I first found it.
