Tyne Tees' North East Tonight got a whole new set on January 1st 2003 (the new titles arrived three months earlier) Although the soft seating area didn't arrive until a week later (this is also used for call Dr Jane and some of the sports shows too)

I'd imagine that there will be no more revamps of any regional news on ITV1'd stations for the time being as they are looking into the possibility of doing a BBC and introducing a corporate look across all regions tied into the new look national news.

Until it emerges whether or not this will happen, I wouldn't imagine any stations would commit to new looks which might only last a few months.

Westcountry Live needs a change too

Indeed, it has been barely 18 months since it was introduced and allready looks old and tired, the old one lasted nearly 5 years with only very slight changes in that time and wasn't really that dated at the time it was withdrawn. The current look was a big mistake and ruined the programme. It was more than just a new look, Westcountry News underwent a major shift in content when that new look was introduced, and now does look like a tinpot cash strapped regional news operation, instead of the slick professional operation that it did before (although I'd imagine that actual budgets are pretty much the same).

It's news service was the last bastion of Westcountry Television for Carlton to kill off - even though the previous look was introduced in 1997, it had it's roots back in 1993. The desk driven look of the programme combining light hearted features (remember 'Stirling Soap'?) with authorative news delivery (such as the 'Insight' feature which didn't survive the revamp) was very Westcountry (not only did the old lowercase gil sans 'westcountry' lettering remain on the graphics, it even appeared on the front of the desk and stayed there right up until the end).

The new look was never intending to be anything less than a total destruction of everything that had gone before, which unfortunately did mean crippling the news service in the process, it was arguably the worst thing Carlton ever did to Westcountry (yes even worse than the name change).
