Calling it just ITV sounds more confident, the main channel doesn't need to be differentiated from the others. ?"

Couldn't agree more.

I do not know anyone that calls it ITV1 it's always just ITV. I'm quite surprised at the negative reaction, given everyone hated when they added the 1 in the first place - guess some just dont like change.

I think this is a great decision, most people I know still refer to it as 'ITV' anyway, and I think people will understand if a continuity announcer says, for instance 'Catch all the latest with The Xtra Factor on ITV2 now, next on ITV its Downton Abbey' ...viewers will know that ITV is the 'main' channel, they aren't stupid.

I'm glad that ITV are making big changes, this rebrand seems very important to them, and I have to say I'm even more interested because of the fact that its headed by a man who was an integral part of the Channel 4 rebrand.

Sorry, are you talking about an ITV PLC rebrand or an ITV1 rebrand? It's not clear when you just say ITV.

This re-brand will just mess up Tumble Tower's coding system!

It won't mess up anything, that is the beauty of Tumble Tower's system. Whatever you want to call it, ITV1, ITV or even Tyne Tees Television, Tumble Tower's system will always refer to the channel as I1. Simple.

Think we'll see a new corporate logo now. Can see them capitalising ITV.

One can only hope.

As for Channel 5, their original brand & idents were best, featuring the 5-in-a-circle-in-a-square logo. It was simple but effective.

They were OK for their time. But the capitalised FIVE era was by far the best.

Hmm, I found that extremely dull. It's all subjective though, I suppose.

This feels like a backwards step to me - and badly timed. Some forumers may never really warmed to "ITV1" and most viewers may not have noticed the "1" - but we've only just switched over to digital and so it's going to become more and more important for ITV to differentiate between their channel and their "umbrella brand".

The BBC have just finished promoting "the Olympic Games on the BBC" - but ITV now wouldn't be able to say "The Champions League on ITV" unless it was exclusively on ITV1. They'd have to say "The Champions League on ITV, ITV2, ITV4 and online" and that just becomes sloppy.
They can say "on the ITV Network". Remember what Sky used to do on their idents? "This is Sky One, part of the British Sky Broadcasting network", later changed to "From the Sky satellite network, this is Sky One" when the logo changed.

I think we'll probably lose the regional names from the EPG.

Personally, I think it's a good move.

I've already mentioned that I've heard people call it 3 because of Channel 3 North East (and my mother has on occasion mixed the two to make ITV3 to mean ITV1). I have heard a few people say ITV, but nobody says Tyne Tees (probably because of C3NE and where I live being so far from those particular rivers).

I call it ITV1, even though I remember ITV, Channel 3 North East, and Tyne Tees (and I'm younger than ELM 2011). People are more receptive to rebrands these days, possibly thanks to Dave & co., and I think changing to plain old ITV will do them no harm. The supposed problems shouldn't materialise, as on the main channel itself the name will only be referred to on single-channel trails. As long as ITV2, 3, and 4 are reinforced during their cross-promotion, the ITV name shouldn't be a problem either.

I think it's a good move for the same reason as Jon - 'ITV' just sounds more confident, more self-assured and a carries a bit more gravitas not to mention most people still refer to the flagship channel as 'ITV' rather than 'ITV1'.

The 'ITV1' brand seems to have diluted the main channel and I think there's a perception amongst people that it is 'tacky' and 'cheap' and that will always be difficult to get away from. I appreciate people have a point in terms of cross-promotion but there are always ways around that, and maybe we should credit viewers with some intelligence in that respect.

'ITV1' has just never sat well with me so I am glad about this.

Yet as its been said STV and UTV do have stronger brands. Hopeful this ITV will bring it back into the same high level as the other to ITV stations

I'm more than pleased with this news. I have to be honest I had to make a double take at the topic titles as I thought this would never happen in a million years!

The name 'ITV' has way more gravitas than 'ITV1' ever did. Especially for the fact that I know zero people who call it 'ITV1', it's mostly 'Central' or less commonly 'ITV' round these parts.

Cross-promoting will be no problem at all. The 'ITV network' solves that problem. And people are forgetting that it was still called 'ITV' whilst ITV2 was first launched for its first 3 years of its life and people knew the difference.

Great news! I'm feeling very positive about this rebrand now.

Or the ITV network?

So we have the ITV channel, owned by ITV plc, and part of the ITV network.

At least references made on Daybreak etc to 'tonight on ITV' will technically be correct in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
