I think BBC1 should follow suit and revert back to "BBC Television". Rolling Eyes

Stupid decision after 11 years. I predict ITV1 will be back again by 2016.

Seeing as most people seem to call it 'Channel 3', it's all a bit of an irrelevance to keep weirdos like us busy.

Great decision!!

ITV is set to drop the numeric one from its flagship channel for the first time in a decade as part of a forthcoming rebranding exercise, according to a report.

Broadcast claims that the rebrand of ITV1 is among a number of changes being made to the commercial broadcaster's network.

This includes the trademark yellow colour on the flagship ITV1 being phased out and a new set of idents - short video clips that accompany the starts of programmes - being introduced.

The report also claims that ITV's digital channels - ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and CITV - will be given a "substantially different" on-screen presence, although they will keep their existing names.

An ITV insider told Broadcast that the rebrand is "not just a paint job", but is about boosting the overall ITV brand.

"This is a big undertaking and will have a sense of scale," said the source. "It is aimed at ensuring viewers attribute our content to the ITV brand."

Rufus Radcliffe, the group marketing and research director at ITV, is said to be leading the rebrand, which is ITV's first such exercise in the last six years.

Previously at Channel 4, Radcliffe was behind the relaunches of E4 and More 4, and he also introduced Channel 4's current 'floating logo'.

ITV's branding changes were originally due to roll out in the autumn, but they have reportedly been pushed back to January, presumably to avoid clashing with The X Factor.

This makes me hopeful that the rebrand will actually be quite good. We all know Channel 4 has the best TV branding out there, E4 and More4 included. Looking forward to seeing what they will come up with.

I still refer to ITV1 as ITV - it rolls of the tongue far easier and is the natural name, although I would always call the BBC channels by their full name.

This seems rather odd to me.

"Bee-Bee-See-One" is four syllables. "Eye-Tee-Vee-One" is also four syllables. Also, both channel's names are three letters followed by a number.

So, quite why the "ITV1" name seemes to be treated by many as though it were the most cumbersome/disjointed possible name for anything in the whole universe, whilst "BBC One" is not so percieved, is rather beyond me...

It's hardly "UKTV G2 +1" now, is it?

What a brilliant idea that was...! Laughing

I find this move very odd. I think since the 2001 name change ITV1 the channel has been firmly established with that name, with ITV being the name for the company itself. I honestly don't see what the point in this name change is, and the only hope is that the company who have done brilliant work on Channel 4, E4 and More4 are over-seeing the change.

BBC1 is easier to say than ITV1 because the letters roll into eachother. I don't see the issue myself, but the 'ITV1' branding/channel has gathered itself a very trashy image, particularly in the mid-noughties, so with higher quality shows such as Downton Abbey, it might be able to change the perception to be more positive.

Theres also the rather obvious point of realigning themselves with STV and UTV.

Odd decision to me, if true. "The next Champions league matches are on ITV4 tomorrow and next Tuesday on ITV". I can only assume some research has been done which suggests that everyone still calls it "ITV" anyway. Still, I'm looking forward to what they come up with. Hopefully it can visually be similar to the titles and graphics of some of their biggest shows.

I don't know anyone who has ever called it Channel 3 (apart from Yorkshire and Tyne Tees for a while)!

I think this is a great decision, most people I know still refer to it as 'ITV' anyway, and I think people will understand if a continuity announcer says, for instance 'Catch all the latest with The Xtra Factor on ITV2 now, next on ITV its Downton Abbey' ...viewers will know that ITV is the 'main' channel, they aren't stupid.

I'm glad that ITV are making big changes, this rebrand seems very important to them, and I have to say I'm even more interested because of the fact that its headed by a man who was an integral part of the Channel 4 rebrand.
