It's dead easy to find overseas soaps which can prove popular in daytime and not cost a bean hardly to import. ITV did this successfully for years, why all of a sudden this obsession with home-grown soaps that by their very definition have to be smash-hits or they lose money due to the costs involved in making a drama series from scratch?
ITV should open up the 5-6pm slot, and leave it open to show a mix of game-shows, local, home-grown or overseas soaps, local TV and teen-shows (which are on too early at their 4.40 slot currently). Crossroads and N&D probably didn't do well partially because they were aimed at an older audience than the people who were actually watching -- H&A, Blockbusters etc are that bit more youth-oriented than the stuff they have on just now.

Well the 5-6 slot might not come straight away as from what I heard Night & Day has produced enough episodes until May 2003 and Crossroads until the summer. A very good way to end Crossroads is that the hotel should get knocked down and end it once for all.

I think that ITV made a very big mistake losing Home and Away and I think its about time they had a overseas soap back in the 5.00 slot.
Just look at Neighbours is still gets 7 million viewers and is the gets the highest ratings for Daytime.
So ITV get Shortland street on NOW:D

I agree
5.10pm Shortland Street
5.40pm ITV Early Evening News
6.00pm Regional News
6.30pm Regional Programmes or possibly a quiz

I dont think having another home grown soap or extending CITV would work out too well and as Richard and Judy aint doing too well on C4 I dont think that would work either. So I think they should either have Shortland Street at 5.00pm with Regional at 5.30pm or SS and a new overseas soap at 5.30pm. Or as I said before move the evening news back to 5.30pm/5.40pm and have regional progs after the regional news.

Oh don't get rid of Night & Day I was really getting into that. The reason it is failing is that your average ITV viewer likes things like BLIND DATE, STARS IN THEIR EYES & SOMETHING FROM HELL & are too stupid to understand Night & Day, it would do well on any other channel, it's only that & Eastenders I like the rest can all finish for good, the only other one I didi like was Btookside but that has got crap.

Night & Day may just be shown at 11pm so there is some promise there. As for Crossroads, the idea of revamping an old soap was novel but they totally lost the plot right from the start. Killing Jill so early on was their main downfall and not re-introducing more older characters like Benny!
But it's not like Carlton not to listen to the public is it!

I like night and day but i think im in the minority! i don't think regional programmes are a good idea in the evening slot, it seems there is a spilt between regions that can and do produce good ones, unfortunately carlton in the westcountry can't manage it, i mean one of the south wests only successful regional programme down here was a dog talent show!
I think itv should start the entertainment progs at 6.30, if they put emmerdale on then, they could get the viewers straight from the bbc news at 6 or the itv local news. Shortland street should be at 5.05, itv news at 5.30

shortland street isn't too bad.
it used to be shown at teatime.
it would be interesting to move it back to that slot.
however, on the other side of the coin, do we want another soap to replace an outgoing soap?
i think a locally produced programme or a quizshow suits the slot better. itv need a variation in their schedule.
sorry soap fans but i think another soap isn't the way forward.

Karl are you watching SS on HTV on Sky digital or another ITV region as Meridian/Border/Carlton also show it.
I think HTV have the best regional service, they do a great news programme and enough shows like 'The Ferrett',
'Wales This Week' etc and still find time to show Shortland Street 5 days a week in regional slots.
What to Granada Media Group do have the naff Lunchtime Live and repeats of Coronation Street in their regional daytime slots!
