Why don't they opt out for the ITV News Channel? (July 2004)

Seems pretty pointless having a news channel which doesn't stream for 24 hours (live)

But anyway thanks for letting me know, I was wondering why!
Thanks

Well I should imagine if a major story occurs they would break in with live rolling coverage, but to be honest how many people at 3am have a huge desire to watch ITV News?

You're right there - I imagine the BBC only keep News 24 going overnight because they have BBC World to cater for. They can't have that many domestic viewers at that time of the day. It would make more sense to keep BBC World going all night, and let them cater for News 24, as many people watching BBC World will probably wonder why the studio changes in the middle of the day for 4 hours, whereas there are probably only a handful of people who would think the same in the UK if it was BBC World providing the news.

It's good that for all their faults, ITV at least recognise there's no point in showing programmes through all the night hours "because they can"; overnight advertising is never sold and programmes would almost certainly overrun, as they did pre-Nightscreen. Those who want the news channel can get it by changing channels.

If they showed ANY programme they'd get more viewers than showing "nightscreen". Or ITV Powerpoint as it really should be called. As to ITV News Channel repeating News at Ten all night, that's just farcical.

Well if you want to give them the necessary pennies, I'm sure they'd be glad. But until you do that, the cost cannot be justified. It's not a farce, it's a budgetary limit.

It doesn't matter to ITV how many viewers they gain overnight because they don't sell any advertising. The reason, AFAIK, that ITV shows PIFs all night is because they've done a deal to show more adverts during prime time in exchange for giving up their overnight slots.

Even if the ITV News Channel was live at that time of day, it wouldn't be worth the handover for what can sometimes be as little as five minutes in some regions. Nightscreen is not only used as a filler to get things back to schedule at 5:30 if they've run over, it also allows Scottish to show different programmes overnight and Yorkshire to show Jobfinder.

BBC One closes down for a much longer duration most nights, and even with Sign Zone on they very rarely close later than 5:00 so you get at least an hour of News 24. The World Today has a significant loyal domestic audience of early risers.

Apparently the reason why World comes from News 24's studio overnight rather than vice versa is the BBC One simulcast aims to act as a 'shop window' for News 24 for analogue viewers.

The powers-that-be clearly would rather BBC One viewers got a full flavour of News 24 complete with its flashy set than have it come from the World studio overnight. The fact that there's next to no domestic news is obviously neither here nor there.

I'd like to see the ITV NC use the regional bulletins from the 10.30pm news to fill the overnight slot - like an ITV News Network Extra.

Cheap and easy to do - but not as repetitive as repeating the same bulletin all night.

Only cheap if you already have a circuit from each regional station back to London and someone there to record them all...

I thought that N8 was more capable of running for 24 hours than N9 and that's why they changed? Nobody even notices when N24 use World's studio except when Bill & Sian™ made a point of saying they were in it as the new studio was finished. (Both the CSO and the plastic one).
