Just to follow-up -- yeah, the network owned stations (of which there aren't many) have adopted the 'network name - number' idea (NBC4) -- they still however er frequently use the call letters (WNBC). It is incredibly confusing! And from every cable or satellite company, the location/number of the channel changes! I have satellite and NBC4 is channel 241! it's ridiculous. But, most people either say: 'I want to watch Channel 4' or 'I want to watch NBC'. Very few people even know what the call letters of the individual stations. But with the none-network owned stations, I think they are very fierce in protecting their call letter identity because most take it on as their company name or their on-screen name. But in the end it's stupid because almost every just says 'Channel x'
