ITV really haven't got the hang of this two channel business. They ought to learn the second channel is supposed to provide an alternative, not just show the same thing as the main channel!  They've already been doing this with The Goal Rush.  Why can't the interactive gubbins just go out on ITV1?

I couldn't disagree with you more. I think ITV have got this two channel business spot on. Like last night ITV1 showed pop idol, then as soon as it finished on the main channel, flick over to ITV2 for Pop Idol Extra and more interviews with the contestants. Therefore providing an increased service for die hard fans of that particular show. They did the same with Popstars Extra and Soapstars. Also, the other week when ITV1 had shown the Bond Movie, flick over to ITV2 who had a themed night of Bond Programming. This is exactly what a second channel should be doing, enhancing the coverage on the main channel in the hope that viewers who enjoyed the show on ITV1 might want to stay with the network for more of the same on ITV2.

The Goal Rush goes out on ITV2 because not everyone has access to the ITV Sport Channel. ITV1 was taking the Goal Rush during the 2nd half, but I understand that is due to change soon, as there is to be a new start time for the Goal Rush on ITV1. Maybe they are about to take the full service ??

Showing GOAL RUSH on ITV1 is a misttake, evryone in most regions has that program free, at least if it was only on ITV Sport Channel or ITV2 they could say, GOAL RUSH ONLY ON ITV DIGITAL or some **** like that, at least it would promote their service a bit more, there ain't much SKY don't have any more, the subscription I think is pretty cheap for over 250 channels and over 50 radio channels!

What are you on about ?? You are making the assumption that everyone has got digital TV. When infact the exact opposite is the case. The majority of the viewing population still have analogue, so your statement that 'everyone has that programme free' is wholly incorrect. ITV1 are providing the service to those viewers without digital TV of whom they obviously still have a commitment to.

One of the rules when BBC2 was set up was that it should always provide a 'strong contrast' with whatever was being shown on BBC1 at the same time.

Fair enough that ITV2 shows complementary programming like the Bond stuff - but just simply simulcasting things seems rather pointless. Things like The Goal Rush should be shown on ITV1 and the ITV Sport Channel, leaving ITV2 to provide a complete alternative.

You cannot compare ITV1 & ITV2 to BBC1 & BBC2. ITV2 is not meant to contrast to ITV1, they show the same types of programmes, repeats from ITV1 and more in depth coverage of certain ITV1 shows.

The only shows that ITV1 & ITV2 simulcast is the last 40 minutes of the Goal Rush and Millionaire for the interactivity on ITV2.

These last few months we have seen ITV change in all areas; going on Sky Digi, changing ITV to ITV1, giving ITV2 a new look, launching the interactive service for WWTBAM, and re-designing itv.com
