I'm pretty sure they've never been part of it. In fact originally they had no plans to have their channels on the service.
I think actually I was getting it mixed up with Kangaroo, which is only the BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

I quite like the logo they are showing on DS. I've only seen the purple version (shown in the OP) before.

Yes, they did want to be part of it, but since they had a contract with Sky they couldn't - until now.

Presumably by continuing with their FTV encrypted regional C4 streams on Astra 2A (a wide beam that covers lots of Europe and thus for rights reasons needs to be encrypted) they are still running with their C4 contract with Sky.
It is just that they are additionally providing a FTA unencrypted stream for freesat on the narrower Astra 2D beam (which rights holders accept as UK/Eire - though can be received on big dishes across Europe - but not as easily as 2A)
Not sure about the E4 situation though.
