but those idents are soulless. like I said, they're more like the titles to a gameshow than an identity - they're just bland and generic - the only reason you know you're watching 'ant1' is right at the very end. you could stick any tv station logo at the end and it work would. i think the brand and identity needs to be more sophisticated than that.
Those ANT1 idents are very good, especially the sports ident.

I think they're a good, modern progression of the 'futuristic' neon style idents that became quite popular in the early nineties. They're exciting and fun, whereas sophisticated idents tend to be the most boring. Sophisticated works on Channel 4, but the ITV1 audience has different expectations. Although yes, the cube logo at the end of the ANT1 idents is a huge anti-climax.
I still think the 2002 LWT ident and presentation style is perfect for ITV1 as a whole.

i'm not sure i accept that. channel 4 and itv1 aren't that different - they're a general entertainment channel. i wouldn't say that channel 4's schedule is particularly sophisticated: mindless escapism doesn't get much more lowbrow than hollyoaks, big brother or wife swap. much of channel 4's schedule is aimed at exactly the same audience as itv1 as far as i can see. in fact, looking at the primetime schedule of channel 4 this week, there is very little 'sophisticated' programming (i might argue that i can't actually see any)
but the point i was trying to make about channel 4's identity is that it's strong and clever - it doesn't mean the programming has to be 'clever' for it to 'work' or the viewers to 'get it' and conversely just because itv1's schedule is mostly rubbish doesn't necessarily mean that the identity of the channel has to be such.

I've always thought Channel 4 caters more for single people, teenagers and young couples, and the majority of these viewers generally tend to be upwardly mobile or middle class. Whereas ITV1 is first and foremost a family entertainment channel - something I would say Channel 4 is definitely not. ITV1's programming also appeals to the other demographics as well though.
I think Channel 4 has the feel of a sophisticated channel because of the arty 'clever' idents, the presentation, Channel 4 News, documentaries, association with More 4, Film Four, etc.

The brighter side promo aired within the adverts at the cinema tonight, I had a quick look around to see a few people with bemused looks on their faces when ITV1 was shown & mentioned. To be honest, even though I've seen it many times before I still get that feeling myself.
mabye we could see "the brighter side (ish)" idents.
Remembering the reaction from the brighter side promo's - i think they'd go down very well !!

It sort of reminds me of FOX's current package in the USA.

That is one hell of an identity. Not sure if it's a bit too much for ITV1, though I think I'd prefer them to take a risk & do something different to everything else.
A few questions about US TV identites, am I right in thinking that they don't use idents, if not do they just go straight into a programme, and when are these identites aired?
I still think that one of ITV1's strongest identities was using the faces of ITV1, they worked well for promoting the channel & for promoting different programmes. I would love to see them take it to this sort of level.
As for the promo for the Autumn, when watching it I noticed that quite a few were short series/one off's. For example Mr & Mrs is used a lot within that trailer, but when it gets to it within the promo, it's labelled as a special Mr & Mrs. The drama side seems a bit bare, but then again they forgot things like Law & Order which sees it's second series / second half of series one. Shouldn't they also continue to promote the Bill as one of their big leading drama's?
There isn't enough entertainment in there for my liking either. Presumably the cube will air on either Saturday or Sunday, I do think they should try to push things into midweek, even if they have one night with a new gameshow at 8 & some entertainment vehicle at 9, be it chat show, Ant & Dec style free for all, or even It'll Be Alright on The Night.

Thats correct they usually go straight into the next programme, but rarely before a programme (perhaps a 'NOW' sting now and again) and whenever they do show an ident it's usually during the advert break. Some channels do though, like Disney Channel (US) and even have a channel voice that announces whats next etc...

I think the idea of the celebrity idents was a good one, but the execution was poor. There was the first lot where you got people like Trevor McDonald just stood there motionless, staring at the camera like something from Village Of The Damed. Then the second batch with the cardboardy yellow and blue set which just looked a bit cheap. The only thing I liked was the music which had a very strong, distinctive logo.
With a little more imagination, they could have worked so much better.
