Is ITV1 going to get a new look?

I'd describe most of ITV1's idents as 'simple and nice', too. But simple and nice doesn't equal fun and exciting. And I think that's what ITV1 needs.

What I hope they don't do though, is go with purely live action idents. That would be more boring and common, plus even the most inventive live action idents don't provide any sense of escapism. I was thinking yesterday, is it any wonder people prefer other forms of entertainment over TV these days, when even the TV idents shove reality down our throats? (I know that's an exaggeration, but you know what I mean...)

No. Viewers don't want reality, nice, or simple anymore. They want fun, escapism, and entertainment.

I like those. A nice mixture of live action, CGI and music.

I think those abc1 idents look crud, more like the titles of a 1990s gameshow presented by michael barrymore.

I think idents have to be clever, no just sticking the logo in your face on a cheaply generated background. anybody can do that.

the problem with itv is that they've never really had an identity as such, hence their idents are bland and generic.

if I was a brand consultant, I'd probably go for something like the current channel 4 set. they're really, really clever.

they blend cgi and reality in a completely seamless way, they get you thinking and they look amazing (especially in hd) and some of them are quite funny.

I have to say, presentation on the main networks is a bit of a mash at the moment. even bbc one looks like a 6th form students' business studies presentation.

The ITV one looks like a poor mans mock of the HTV logo from the 90s!

Those ANT1 idents are very good, especially the sports ident.



They're also really, really boring. But Channel 4 can get away with boring.

ITV1 is a different case. Clever, witty or arty idents just wouldn't suit the channel. It's alright saying they need to 'stand out', but when you get bogged down in the issue of standing out, you just end up copying the latest trends and fads 'because that's what other channels are doing' and end up not standing out as something unique at all. BBC Two's latest refresh is a good example of what can happen when you fall into this trap.

I don't think ITV1 needs to worry about standing out from the hundreds of other channels really. ITV is a major broadcaster with 50+ years of TV experience and history - they stand out without even trying. However, their idents and overall presentation style has lost its way, and I think viewers would really appreciate it if ITV just started making a bit more effort again.



Well, personally I've given up caring what the BBC does anymore. Things are only going to get worse so there's no point.

If ITV are to change anything to ITV1, I think it would be in September. Seems a popular month for change for ITV...

Wasn't there talk about ITV3 and ITV4 getting new identities aswell, after the ITV2 revamp?

I think they like to change everything in September after the main summer holidays ready for autumn branding. I don't really see ITV just doing ITV2 and leaving everything else. A change may be on the way, these 'brighter side' promos are pretty weird too...
