In fact, what ITV1 is selling is commercial air time.
The context of the comment was continuity announcers, presentation and promotion. The purpose of the former are to sell viewers (compell, encourage, entice, cajole) on the idea of watching ITV1, to keep watching ITV1 and to not change channel when the commercial breaks pop up.
Does anyone believe as both Corin and I believe this objective is not being met?

I heard the new voice on the team last night (end credits The Bill) and rather than share some information it was a spontaneous audition for promotions voice over work.
.
If true, clever stuff from someone only doing her 2nd live shift - the key to maximising your income in any gig is to know how to work the system.
Given that it's a shop window every night for potential freelance work, you can't knock what she's trying to do.

Not implying mischievous or cynical commercial intent on the part of the individual concerned I was commenting on the sound I heard.
Your first sentence in effect says it may or not be a case of self promotion whereas your second suggests very strongly that you know that it was.
If this announcer has resolved to professionally look after No1 - WELL DONE THAT GIRL! It's not personal it's business.

Since all BBC channels went 'Free-To-Air' on Sky recently, I've been watching BBC 1 England now and again (my default is BBC 1 Wales), and I must say that a couple of the male announcers do have very strange voices.
I'm not sure who the name of the guy I heard into the Six O Clock News was the other night, but he speaks in a really odd way. He sounded EXACTLY like an incarnation from the Smashie & Nicey era.

In this modern age, is it not about time that the BBC and ITV sacked all their announcers and replaced them with computer generated voice announcements. The savings would be considerable, and I am sure that stockholders of Granalton would endorse such a move.
And when the technology is up to it, they could do the same with the newsreaders.
Viewers would never notice the difference!

There's one bloke on BBC1 who sounds a bit different from the rest, hid voice gets on my nerves,

But which BBC region? And is it because of their strange accents?
Maybe the BBC really are cutting corners and trying to replace their announcers with computer generated voices?

As for ITV-1 trying to win over viewers by self promotion, Banksey is indeed correct in observing that they are failing miserably -- the problem is, when you are trying to promote such a poor product, not matter how good the promotion and something else better is available at the same price (ie on BBC) then people will prefer that.

It doesn't matter which region, except on weekdays for eight seconds just before 1pm, 6pm and 6:30pm. Do you think the BBC announcers have "strange" accents?
Some might say that it appears to be going that way.

I may be wrong, but I think that's Matthew Jackson. A real management favourite, I've been told, but it sounds very artificial to me.
