Indeed, and there was a static 'ribbons' used at the end.
It seems there is a range of Xmas idents in use, one with very mellow music that is often used into the news and therefore isn't out of place going into the news, and then the usual very jolly one used at other times.
SLightly OT, but there was a good cock-up by the announcer over the Next ident before Coronation Street, saying that 'The Omnibus is next here on 2!' Do the announcers get told what channel they will be announcing on or something?
Well not even 5 minutes into 2005 and ITV1 go back to their Normal ident before introducing the movie.
Quite odd they did that, especially as every other day of the year, the TV day runs to 6am.
It's also odd that the trailer for New Year's Day features the Xmas look, and also that ITV1's idents wern't technically that Christmassy, so could easilly have been used at New Year as well!
So has the ice background been made into a pernament fixture for ITV1 idents, as I have seen many "Nomal" next, and coming up idents, all featuring the full icey backgrouns with normal ITV1 Music, without the festive characters.
Are they using the ice alongside the ribbons/beams/clouds, or instead of?
I do like this idea of introducing a seasonal element to these idents. Did BBC Two not do a similar thing last year by using the Snowman ident in February?

Yes, because it snowed in London. Up here in the North East, we were enjoying sunny spells . The (many) times it did snow here though, normal idents on BBC2.
Westcountry Television had the best example of seasonal variation, in their fabulous idents between 1993-99.
Actually, there is no limit to the number of backgrounds they could introduce - perhaps even going for a sort of Westcountry stylee. But, since the new marketing director is likely to wheel out his/her vision for a new channel image within the next few years, I very much doubt there'll be any significant changes.
