Actually I quite liked the Ice Age stuff it brought a bit of humour to the bland graphics, and ITV isn't the only one to do Ice Age promoting, Channel 7 (7) Australia, have created special Ice Age idents as well.

Old logo or new, what spoils it is the additional text "THE BOAT RACE 2006". Don't the visuals speak for themselves?

It's like when ITV Schools introduced additional text (poetry, name of person in portrait) onto their interval slides. Anything more than "Independent Television For Schools and Colleges" made it look cluttered.

ITV's pres of the boat race has become a complete joke. Years ago it was a competition between two universities, now it's a fight to the death. It's a ridiculous over-dramatisation of what will probably end up being a light sporting event.

Indeed; it's not really necessary, and it would look better without it. After all, you don't see the text about Christmas below festive idents!

I'm guessing it's there because they thought a number of viewers would be unfamiliar with what the ident was showing. Mind you, the announcer would probably say something about the Boat Race during the ident anyway...

I have to confess, I wouldn't have known who this guy was if it hadn't been for the namecheck. But up to then, no text other than the legend had appeared on the slides so why fix something that wasn't broke...

Surely if they'd have just done something as simple as flipping the footage then surely they would have been rowing the boat through the gap in the ITV1 logo. Alternatively, couldn't they have just had the logo ripple on in the bottom left?

I also think that the text is not needed, its quite clear what it is for, and as said the announcer would mention it anyway.
