Right then; anyone fancy a small wager on how many of the Meridians get Fred and Debbie again at 18:00 tonight?

If the splits are along advertising lines, surely there are more sub-regions to come? I'm sure TTTV's Chatton transmitter (Northumberland) gets different advertising to Pontop, it always used to.

There still seem to be a few (3 IIRC) test channels on the ITV transponders, which suggests there may be more sub-regions to come. Does anyone know which these might be? Yorkshire South has to be a contender.

BTW, I don't like some of the new labels the sub-regions have got. When flicking through the search and scan banner, 'ITV1 TT S' doesn't really stand out as much as 'ITV1 Tyne Tees' did... and why when they can manage 'ITV1 Meridian S' do they have to abbreviate 'ITV1 Mer W'*?

*Or it might be the other way round!

If there's not enough space for the full Tyne Tees name, then at least put it down as "ITV1 TTTV-S" or even "ITV1 TTT-N" rather than the "TT S" which as you say, doesn't stand out and means very little.

They missed a trick anyway, what would have been the problem with "ITV1 Tyne T(N)" for the north and "ITV1 T Tees(S)" for the south?

Well if they could fit 'ITV1 Tyne Tees' then surely the obvious solution (assuming that uses the maximum number of characters) would be to have 'ITV1 TyneTeesN' whilst leaving south as 'ITV1 Tyne Tees' (having 'TyneTeesS' would admittedly look stupid)

I don't think the left hand of whoever's doing the abbreviations this week ever spoke to the right hand of the person who did the original set of abbreviatiions.

After all, "BorderSco" without a space was good enough in the original set.

Sorry, but is Meridian West/North available yet?

Incidentally, when did ITV suddenly expand to 5 transponders? I realise they are needed for the extra news regions but I obviously missed the thread (if there was one) about them being acquired.

Last time I checked they still only had 3 transponders, one for ex-Carlton stations, one for ex-GMG stations (with Meridian SE being the only extra subregion), and one for everything else and don't remember when this changed.

And does anyone know what stations are grouped as they are? Wheras there used to be some logic to it, they now seem to pretty much at random - there's different regions of the same station over different transponders, stations previously own by different companies on the same transponder and stations transmitted from different sites on the same transponder.

Errrrrrr, yes and no!

There's a North channel there called Mer N on transponder ITV-2 (see list) and, as far as I know the postcode mapping's been done to put it on channel 103 in the correct area.

HOWEVER, as at 18:00 last evening North was still radiating South programmes, as it put out the Fred and Debbie version of Meridian Tonight.

They got the South-East sub-region correct yesterday, as South-East also got Fred and Debbie on Monday; so we can HOPE they sort out the North bit today.

Edit:- North still showing South at 13:15 today.

They've had the extra transponders, largely unused, since quite early in the New Year, Chris. The original Anglia and Tyne-Tees moved onto ITV-4 in early March.

As to any logic of who's on what, I haven't a clue. At first I thought splitting sub-regions of the same region over more than one transponder was in case there was a fault on one transponder, but that doesn't make too much sense to anyone who just relies on their postcode mapping and doesn't know how to add channels.

Funnily enough exactly the same thought had crossed my mind. Smile

The recent re-labelling smacks of it having just been done by an engineer with no concern for making the names viewer-friendly.

I would think 99.99% of the 7 million users of Sky boxes wouldn't have a clue how to add channels manually !!

Just noticed that ITV News has been removed from 10.832 H 22.0 5/6.
ITV News is now only present on 10.714 H 22.0 5/6.

It looks like a move to clear a channel slot on 10.832 H ready for another ITV1 sub region to start testing.

Well if they have cleared a space on 10.832, then the only thing I can see going there is the Westcountry sub-regions - but there's still doubt hanging over that - must give them a ring and see if they know anything.

It's unlikely to be the Grampian sub region, as Grampian is on 10.906 - but if there's no more room on 10.906....
