As I understand it, ITV are no longer interested in Salford. If that is the case, couldn't ITV utilise Leeds as its northern 'outpost' and leave Manchester/Salford to the BBC?

Surely then they'll have the same fuss (probably more fuss) made about the closure of their Manchester studios?

It's not uncommon for studio centres to have one entrance for audiences and another for staff/visitors/the talent etc.

But these are right next door to one another!

Could have different access control systems. Staff may have secure barriers to swipe through, but you wouldn't want these for audience use. (You'd simply close the audience doors when not in use)

They may be next to each other, but may not lead to the same interior location as well - the studio audience entrance may just have access to the studios and not production offices, galleries etc.

The BBC have a similar arrangement at TVC - so that things like mobile phones can be removed and stored for the duration.

Yep - Granada is an original ITV company with a greater heritage, whilst Yorkshire isn't an original franchise and didn't arrive until UHF TV in the late 60s. (The YTV region was originally covered by VHF Granada and Anglia transmitters I believe - with Anglia having a news office in Hull)

It's perfectly possible to repo the studio cameras when the Calendar's weather is running.

And you reckon they could re-dress the set in this time?

The possibility of having to pre-record or move the time of ITV's regional news to allow co-locating with the BBC has been widely discussed.

Yes.
"Calendar" used to have a change of gallery Director, Producer and PA during the weather reset all cameras for "Tonight".

That's not re-dressing the set though. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure Calendar and Tonight had the two separate sets set up in the studio at the same time, so it was just a case of repositioning the cameras. Given the small size of the BBC Leeds studio, I very much doubt that they'd fit a second set in there.

Granada originally held the weekday franchise for the "north of England" and broadcast from both Winter Hill and Emley Moor on VHF. At weekends the franchise was held by ABC (who also had the weekend franchise for the Midlands). The franchise boundaries were re-drawn in 1968, with Yorkshire TV awarded the contract for the area East of the Pennines on a 7 day basis. Granada retained Lancashire and Cheshire. The transmitter at Belmont (UHF and VHF at the time) was re-allocated to Yorkshire from Anglia in the mid 70s to make Yorkshire more viable. Not everyone was happy with the change at the time. And, of course, in UHF terms, large parts of North Yorkshire have always been served by Tyne Tees from Bilsdale. Both Yorkshire and Granada made some fantasic dramas from the late 60s until well into the 80s, set in and reflecting life in their areas. Much of that has disappeared into the bland mush that is ITV PLC.

Could you imagine Watching, The Brother McGregor or Brass being made by ITVplc (all made by Granada) or Only When I laugh, Duty Free or Rising Damp (all made by Yorkshire) - or my favourite programme of all time - How We Used To Live

I could imagine them being made by ITV Plc in the same competitive and regulatory environment as existed when they were originally made.

But things move on, ITV in 2009 wil never be ITV as it was in 1989

Hello noggin, hope you're well Wink

I believe that mobile's are only removed on shows where there's a possibility of a result being "leaked". E.g on Strictly the phones are given back to the audience after the 10pm publishing deadline for the Sunday papers.

Apart from that, I believe audience members can keep phones?

would they not remove them to stop them going off during the recording of the show?

Would seem a bit of a palaver when they could just ask everyone to switch them off.

Yep - it is only some shows that do the mobile confiscation thing - presumably for that reason.
