Before Calendar moved to its present location it was made in studio2 in the main building. Where is studio 2 located in the main building?
I know that the old ATV and Southern studios were built with asbestos, does this building have the same problem? If it does this could be why ITV are mothballing the centre as they cant afford to demolish them in the present climate.

I believe Studio 2 became the northern transmission centre.

Why 'mothball' them so that they cannot be used by anyone? Why not sell the building off?

Have you seen property prices recently? I suspect mothball is a euphemism for "close them now but wait for the property prices to go up again before we sell them"

I suggest a trip to Kirkstall Road to check out the abandoned bus garage across the road, the fire station, former Arla food dairy and various derelict properties on Burley Road - not exactly a property hotspot!

As for 'mothballing', I work in the transport industry (hence the reference to the old bus garage) and quite often, if a contract is lost, a site is mothballed until either the contract is won again or new work can be justified for its retention.

I'm hazarding a guess, it will reopen one day. ITV has relied too heavily on poor drama and other shows from independents, and Grade was lobbying to have the 25% quota removed. Perhaps if he bought in some talent, instead of cutting costs, he might just save the station. His uncle would have had the place full of people making programmes for export - a sad fact that ITV has overlooked.

As mentioned in the Newsroom, MediaGuardian is reporting eight ITV regional news services may share BBC buildings. Eight of course is all of the ITV news operations outside London. If Calendar ends up moving in with Look North, that'll be another building closed on Kirkstall Road.

Heartbeat has had its day - it's clearly not going to move out of it's 1960s period.

Heartbeat was old lady feel-good rose-tinted rubbish.

And calm down. One question mark is sufficient to indicate the interrogative.

Yep - it looks like the suggestion is that the the 8 ITV regional news studio centres close, and they share studio facilities and technology platforms with the BBC. There is a note that ITV might have to move their transmission time to allow time to re-set the studios.

Reading the memorandum it suggests that ITV will get one edit suite, and desktop editing, along with deskspace. ITV will have to use the BBC's chosen editing and transmission system. (This could make ITN's job more tricky - as they've recently shifted to an all-Avid system - and none of the Beeb regions use that... They're all Quantel apart from BBC London)

Looks like ITV and the BBC will have to find a way of privatising their newsrooms though - and presumably some way of ensuring their running orders and edits remain private...?

Some BBC buildings have space that would allow the physical separation required - but others (Norwich???) are almost too small just for the BBC. I wonder if they'll be looking to find more space in some? (Presumably ITV will pay rent on the space that they occupy and the incremental costs, but these will be less than the separate running costs they currently pay?)

And it isn't just the 8 studio centres - it looks like they are hoping to share production space at the smaller operations (i.e. local radio)

I should think not, young man!

I do recognise there's a large audience for lavender-scented unchallenging pseudo-drama with lovely scenery - but 10 years of it is quite enough.

Blimey, you're quite the dictator aren't you Gavin? I bet you look good in leather and jackboots too Laughing Well nobody forces you to watch Heartbeat Gav... it's more like 17 years by the way. If you are going to opinionately rant about something, least get your facts right Wink And it never moved out the 1960s either-- a bit of a problem when they had a Christmas special each year-- nice bit of continuity there YTV Rolling Eyes

In Heartbeat's defence, does all drama (pseudo or otherwise!) have to be challenging? I thought it was ideal Sunday night programming, a relaxing watch at the end of the weekend, and not just old ladies enjoyed it-- I know people of all ages who watched and enjoyed it. I agree it was rose-tinted nostaligiac fluff, but I believe that was the idea-- and people willfully buy into it.

Challenging no, but entertaining, I'd say yes. I am a "young man" and I yes enjoyed it: Sorry I contradict your mind-policing on that score, I shall repent and be punished for my sins

PS: This is meant to be a light-hearted rebuke Wink-- love you really Gav

Well Roger, if you say it was entertaining then perhaps I have missed something (apart form a seven year block of my life) in this programme I confess I saw only the once.

I have found your taste to be impeccable thus far, after all.
