Likely to be massive consternation among horse racing fans in Ireland if RTE (who have dropped nearly all GB racing coverage bar Aintree and Cheltenham in the past decade or so) don't pick up the slack. (Or unless these rights include Ireland).

That could be interesting as this is something which would work well on UTV Ireland I'd have thought.

At the moment UTV Ireland have repeats of Emmerdale or Coronation Street on weekend afternoons so from 2017 if UTV Ireland are allowed to show the rights every saturday that would probably be on ITV4 and wouldn't be shown on RTE it could as you say do well. It would also do excellent for them if with ITV backing they could take the rights to big meetings like the Grand National from RTE.

Actually the last time ITV covered a horse race was in 1991. Derby Day was covered jointly with Channel 4. So it'll be a 26 year gap.

Shame that the majority of the coverage, and the Saturday morning show will be on ITV4. It's not as if they have anything decent at that time anyway!

What about the overseas races that Channel 4 covers, such as the Melbourne Cup, the Prix de'l arc di triomphe, Irish Grand National?

Well they won't be sold by the UK authorities but can't see any reason for C4 continuing to cover them. Not sure they do cover the Melbourne Cup and the Prix de'l arc di triomphe has only been in recent years since the BBC gave up coverage. If they do show the Irish Grand National it's with little publicity in amongst another race card - the main international event they show is the Dubai World Cup, which is also on Sky along with all the meetings leading to it. That's the only one I could see ITV picking up as they obviously value a bit of FTA exposure (though it could have been part of the Dubai sponsorship deal with C4).

I think we'll probably end up with slightly more than the 34 fixtures on ITV simply due to ITV4 having other commitments and them being more likely to move the racing up than most of their other sports, though it would be a shame if they bumped it to ITV3 when ITV were just showing afternoon repeats. Seems to be increased coverage to at 94 days, up from 90 I think currently on C4. Not too surprised the preview show is on ITV4 but they could have slotted it into the 8.30am breakfast slot on ITV, perhaps with an ITV4 repeat later.

Nowadays though with sports rights of the lesser sports especially it seems the contract is only until something better comes along so I do wonder if ITV regain either the FA Cup or Champions League rights and C4 opt out of F1 after 2018 whether it could be back on C4 screens before the end of this contract. Horse racings ideal scenario if that became a possibility would probably be for ITV to retain some of the show piece events and C4 pick up the ITV4 cards and a couple of the show piece events.
Turns out nobody had 2020 vision.

RTÉ haven't used Channel 4 for UK racing for a few years now. Cheltenham is now done with Racing UK coverage with an RTÉ Sport logo and twitter handle covering Racing UK DOG

Lets see if ITV will go after the Irish horse racing rights. also I agree ITV might hoover up the other international rights heck there might even expand them.

I wonder how happy the smaller courses will be with only being broadcast on ITV4 - that's quite a demotion down the EPG.

You know, there are quite a few sports on ITV4, such as Moto GP highlights, Bundesliga Highlights, some PDC darts, some cycling. Some events are on ITV on a Saturday, such as some 6 nations matches. I can't help but wondering if ITV have missed a trick, by not reintroducing a Saturday afternoon sports programme, like World of Sport, with racing, and hgihlights of the events that are on ITV4 getting a repeat on WOS. Would be good to have some filler material, and allow even the lesser courses to be on the main channel.

I see your logic, but there will be plenty of weekends especially during winter that aside horse racing ITV will have no other Sport to show. Quite a coup for ITV, and it's a great content boost for ITV4, which as stated will take the bulk of the midweek afternoon coverage. ITV will probably make most of their investment back for the Grand National, even on Channel 4 it still gets 8/9M viewers.

As nice as an idea as it sounds I think things have moved on a lot from the days of Grandstand & World of Sport. With more broadcasters, greater competition there is an appetite to give sports greater exposure. We have moved away from magazine sports programmes into dedicated programmes, and even channels for some sports.

Everything now has to be in its own self contained package, particularly on commercial TV to give sponsors exposure and for viewers to find the things they want to watch in already crowded schedules.

For instance, I expect the PDC Darts or BTCC would much prefer a dedicated slot / programme than a random slot inside a bigger sports programme as it limits their exposure. Dedicated coverage may well even be a pre-condition when awarding these rights.
