Compared to other channels, I believe ITV weather is not so good. The bullatins are now shorter and are not really in depth. What do you think? and has anyone heard if there are going to be any changes to the weather presentation?
I am looking forward to the BBC's new look weather early next year
I don't pay that much attention to the weather, but my dad swears by the BBC's forecasts. He, like you, feels that the ITV and Meridian forecasts are too rushed and shallow to be of much use.
BBC Weather is obviously the best, but ITV Weather is useful too. The BBC Weather goes in - depth ( which is good ), and ITV Weather is a quick summary - which is useful if you're in a hurry.
The BBC weather is best in terms of presenters, graphics and presentation. But just because a certain weather bulletin is longer than another doesn't necessarily mean it's better.
I, for one, remember when BBC have broadcast weather bulletins that have lasted many minutes long and afterwards because there was SO much information given that I couldn't remember what was happening and when. Whereas if you keep a weather bulletin down to around two minutes - that should be more than enough time to adequately cover the uk for 24 hours. Add more time for Snow reports and Europe/Worldwide weather.
I am more of an ITV Weather person, the National is alright, though it needs a change somehow, but I enjoy Chrissie Reidy, Robin Lermitte and Becky Mantin as presenters, they are good. But I think ITV is better for Regional Weather as it has full bulletins at several times of the day, usually which aren't integrated (Only 6.30 and 10.30 are) with the normal News bulletins, compared to the BBC. Plus the team at YTV I have got used to, they all come across very friendly and informative on screen, plus the graphics are better too.
Graphically, Meridian Weather used to be very creative with their symbols due to the fact that their logo could be used as both a sun and a moon. Of course, the generic GMG graphics put paid to that a few years back. I can remember being in Devon in 2001 and being impressed by Westcountry Weather's graphics (which I presume were generic Carlton ones).
The BBC's weather symbols seem to be "just right", if you know what I mean - others seem flawed in comparison.
Weather forecast presentations on BBC television are to be revamped using technology more commonly associated with 3D gaming than meteorology.
The BBC Weather Centre is currently in the process of rolling out a version of Weatherscape XT, developed by Metra in New Zealand. Other versions of the software can already be seen on CNBC in the UK as well as other stations internationally including Nine Network in Australia.
The new system will replace the BBC's current six-year-old weather graphics. There will be less reliance on traditional maps, with weather forecasts instead feeling like a flight simulator game. Details revealed today indicate that forecasts will include a fly-over element with meteorologists being able to change "camera angles" to focus on particular parts of the UK. Rain and other weather conditions will be rendered in 3D, adding more of a realistic look to the on-air presentation.
Meteorologists at the BBC Weather Centre will work on PC workstations with relatively high specs: 2.6GHz P4, 1GB DDR SDRAM, 80GB hard drives, and the NVidia FX6800 Ultra 256MB graphics card to render meteorological data from the Met Office in real-time. The actual graphics servers that will be used to put forecasts on air are equipped with Dual 3.06GHz Zeon processors, 2GB DDR SDRAM, SCSI hard drives, and the NVidia graphics card.
"It thinks and works a bit like a computer game," said Colin Tregear, project manager, of the new software. "We are trying to take weather data and generate weather graphics on a 3D map that actually looks like the weather."
He continued: "We hope that by showing the weather that will actually go over your head, you will know whether it is going to be sunny or cloudy where you are."
I might be talking rubbish, but am I right in thinking that the ITV regions weather does not appear unified like the news does. I'm certain there is different styles between national and regional, but I think there is also variations from region to region.
Does anyone know why this is? Why havn't they unified the brand, like with the news?
Ang on, ITV Weather has WORSE pres than the BBC? Are you Kidding? My god, where are you people from, and are you blind?!
I think alot of people need to open their eyes on this forum. To me most of you seemed like you are forced to like the BBC. Just because ITV took all the regional names, and you didnt like it. Its like you can't accept theirs more to life than the BBC. These are the people who take over 100 quid of you every year, come on people you can do better than that!! I know, im gonna be told by the senior members and the rest of you, that im wrong and you are right.
