I would have thought Virgin and other distributors would have used 27.5w as their source or as backup.

What this has highlighted, is that Virgin Media seem to source their feeds of ITV from Astra 28.2, and not
as some would believe directly from ITV/STV/UTV. I suspect the same applies to BBC, 4 and 5 ?

They definitely don't get them directly from ITV. As far as I know, ITV is added in at the local headend - so for example in the East Midlands (Diamond Cable's legacy area) ITV Central East, ITV Central West and ITV Yorkshire are added at Diamond Plaza, Daleside Road, Nottingham (their EPG position - or not in some cases* is decided based on the postcode information attached to the box/smartcard).

I think Channel 4 and 5 are distributed nationally, but I could be wrong on that. Do they still do regional advert sales?

In the days of Diamond Cable Analogue in poor weather the Yorkshire signal was noticeably worse than the Central East signal; I guess using a satellite source has eliminated that issue.

* an obvious example being Cable 7 which is only available in North and North East Lincolnshire, despite being physically delivered to every box on the Diamond Plaza headend; it's not viewable since there is no EPG position assigned to it (unlike Sky, where one can manually add channels). Conversely - the same was true of S4/C until recently - except it was piped *nationally* but only added to the EPG for Welsh postcodes.

So ITV was out for much of the early evening on Sky last night, yet Emmerdale still managed to beat EastEnders.

19:00 - Emmerdale: 5.05m (28.5%), +1: 257k (1.3%), 22:35: 658k (5.9%)
19:30 - EastEnders: 4.89m (26.2%), 22:30 (BBC3): 651k (4.5%)

SKY and Freesat suffered from technical issues - remember satellite TV is NOT just SKY Very Happy Very Happy

Dunno if this is connected, but there was a little blip/stutter during the last scene of the 2nd Emmerdale tonight.

I was watching on Central HD.

Same happened on STV HD. The ITV HD DOG appeared for a few seconds during the jumping.

Do they have access to that? I thought it was run by Arqiva as a backup feed for the DVB-T/T2 transmitter network.

Evidently not!

Or maybe it shows how flawed the rating system is.

Even if they did, it's still not much use for ITV. It only carries back ups of national BBC SD and HD TV channels, plus ITV HD and C4 HD, to enable transmitter sites to rebuild PSB 1 and 3 muxes should their regular input feeds fail.

So have they actually said what the problem was?

Not that I'm aware of. From the reports that some regions were replaced by alternative feeds, would indicate perhaps the problem wasn't on the uplink or transponders themselves, but Arqiva's router at a 'baseband level'.

If the actual carriers had failed, Sky boxes normally revert to a blue screen, and a 'No Signal' style banner,
did that happen, or did the channels just go to black (or green) and silence ?
