Incidentally, what is the production cost for 30 seconds of Emmerdale Farm and Consternation Street?

At five(?) episodes per week for each show that is a tenfold (?) saving.

And how many full weeks of a year? How much of a saving is that?

You know, to the stockholders of Granalton this looks like another brilliant move!

That'll be Granada. Carlton have nothing to do with either of those shows

But only for a few more days.

There's a whisper that the merger clearance announcement is due next week.

If it causes that many problems, why not just shorten the opening titles of the programmes, the titles in and out of the breaks and credits at the end. I know it would probably mean redoing the theme tunes, but surely that's not beyond the realm of possibility.

They've allready pulled that trick - end credits now have strict maximum running times of 30 seconds for prime time programmes and 20 seconds for daytime programmes.

I can see a day coming where we won't have *any* end credits at all. I mean, CiTV used to chop them off altogether at one stage although they do seem to let them run now albeit squashed. Look at the official site for "My Parents Are Aliens" - there's a link to the Series 4 Credits on there! How long before main network starts taking this approach and all we see is a "to view the credits for this programme, please visit itv.com/coronationstreet. Next on ITV1: The Bill" type voiceover/caption?

If it means more commercials, then the stockholders of Granalton salute you!

That's allready how it's done in Germany. The ECP 'credits' for almost every programme usually just list a couple or three principal actors, possibly a director and producer, and maybe (but not very often) a copyright notice - usually no more than 2 or 3 quickly rushed screens with a trailer running beside them. If you want to see the full credits for the programme, you'd have to look them up on the respective channels' website.

In principle I'd have no problem with losing credits. 99% of the time I don't read them, and it's only because we are use to them that they would be missed. As long as the programme has a clear ending sequence it would be fine.

Spooks didn't have end credits. I didn't notice anyone complaining.

The BBC didn't save time by not showing any end credits with "Spooks" as they used to show a clip of next week's episode.

How about Channel 4 (and the brilliant Chris Morris') www.jamcredits.com.
