The point is that ITV knew they were going to show the football so in that instance should have turned off the automated system until it was safe to turn it back on.
It's worth remembering that ITV does put out many hours of live programming every day without accidently playing out adverts - GMTV, This Morning, Loose Women, all the news bulletins as well as every live sporting event they've transmitted.
It's a shame that this cock up happened just at the wrong moment, if it was Phillip and Fern that got interrupted then there would have been a lot less fuss
