I can't help but think that tonights shambollick on air technical problems are symptomatic of the state of ITV. Not only did they cut to a commercial break while footy fans were glued to the match in extra time, but they
missed
the goal by Everton. Then we have a massive breakdown after the footy. At least three minutes long. We got a poor excuse of an apology, by an announcer who sounded as though he'd been dragged off the street. Or was it a recording?. What's happened to old style presentation breakdowns. Why didn't he apologise more than once ? What's happened to the days when the announcer would keep the viewers informed, and sounded like they knew what they were doing.Tonight was a total embarrassmentfor the network. Once upon a time there would be rundowns on screen telling viewers aboutf the rest of the night or the next days programme, and even music. Not now. Sadly like ITVs share price, all that's gone in the gutter and proper presentation is so last decade!!!
Mr Grade please take a close look at ITV1. It's the Nations main terrestrial commercial broadcaster , yet it's now in a terminal state. The share price is pitiful, transmisson has been outsourced to Chiswick, regional programmes are all but finished, local news will next week become a former shadow of itself. Ad revenue is sinking fast, staff morale is on the floor and the axe sounds like its to fall yet again on jobs on March 4th. Can it really get any worse.
Bring back old style presentation, Announcers who know what they are talking about and can do the job, Good idents(No more live action rubbish. Let's have a logo everyone recognises like good old NBC or CBS) Good programmes that attract advertisers,(Remember them) Be proud of your regions-bring back the names, and make regional programmes that reflect THE regions of our nation. All this together with some good old style ITV values and maybe ...just maybe you will be able to save this ailing network. But then if you don't want to do this anymore Mr Grade perhaps its time for Ofcom to redavertise the franchises.Even in these difficult economic times I have no doubt there would be many companies who'd welcome the chance to run an ITV franchise properly. I, like so many live in hope
