Exactly!
With the Wheelchair ident being shown, Reg McLaughlin will criticise the BBC for being patronising. Without it being shown, Reg McLauglin will crticise the BBC for not being equal.
With telethons on TV, people like Reg will say they patronise and differentiate. Without them, there would be complaints the media aren't doing enough.
So maybe we can take out the "patronising" films? No. Because that would mean dumbing down.
Maybe we could make the films less patronising? That's what they did. And they are STILL being criticised.
Do you see the point I'm making Katherine? Because I can't yet work out why you've picked up on it.

If 'able-bodied' society had made the effort to be more tolerant, helpful and assistive of people with disabilities in the past instead of adopting a 'lock them in the garret' attitude, there would be no need to raise extra funds in the first place. Increasingly, charitable events raise funds for resources that should be provided by the government for disabled people as a RIGHT. This includes education, transport and other equipment that enables disabled people to be independent.
Telethon and Children in Need exist purely because governments are more keen on using public money to create white elephants like the Dome oblivious to directing their money at things that would make a greater and longer lasting difference to many more people. I't governmental buck passing.

if the Telethon or CIN never existed, programme makers would be bombarded by letters from people like Reg McLaughlin saying they are doing nothing to raise money for the causes.

TV
indeed - channel's studio screams *challenge tv* at me for some reason.
interesting to note HTV are the only ones represented in the 92 titles by a itv-generic-type logo (well - not HTV in the IT* - but their logo on an itv background) - even border were represented by their proper logo.
and can anyone confirm whether HTV wales and HTV west provided separate opts during telethons - or was it all done at cardiff? west and wales get separate mentions in the titles - so i'd guess separate - but you never know.

Interesting to see on those images on the previous page the obvious production values. LWT / Thames and Central seemed to have put the most effort in by building huge sets, whereas Channel seems to have a broom cupboard to present from! Also, note that the Granada studio seems somewhat tacky and 'gameshow' like ...

Notice that the logo used on each Telethon is slightly different
1988 just had "ITV" with lines cut across it
1990 had the IT* generic
But by 1992 the lines that cut out of the ITV triangle no longer seem to be there on the Telethon logo and therefore is solid

I'm pretty sure I remember HTV West having it's own Telethon coverage. IIRC it just came from an office somewhere in the HTV building with people answering phones in the background and one of those 'totaliser' things on a wall... There might have been a studio too, but I can't really remember.

You misunderstand me. I'm not saying that - I blame the government's disability provision shortcomings for making things like Telethon and Children in Need necessary in the first place!!

The faults of the government and the human race can't be blamed on Michael Aspel or the BBC - not even by you!
You're generalising the original points that were made about the ITV Telethon!

Has anyone thought of doing any ITV1 Telethon '04 mocks? That would be such a great idea, seeing how other people would imagine it to be like
If you feel like it, post it up! I'd love to see all the different designs

If they're going to bring Telethon back, might I request they redirect the raised money to the coffers of disability rights organisations.
Instead of having celebrities desperate for a bit of publicity doing silly things, Telethon should focus on serious no-holds-barred documentaries that expose the often hard and uncomfortable truths surrounding the people that Telethon are helping.
If they shun the banal stuff, maybe it will make the public sit up and take notice. The relevance of that which I am speaking about can be seen around each one of us when we're going about our daily affairs.

But I'm asking what the relevance is when responding to a comment I made about Telethon in a Telethon thread!
