Yes - it was fab, and really showed how all the different itv areas could work together. I suppose it would be a little differerent today, I can only just remember telephon92 - Micheal Aspel did about 18 hours on live tv didn't he?

He certainly did. And it was great from what I remember! Raised a lot of money for charity too, which was obviously the idea...
There was a website about it a while ago, but I don't know if it's still around. If anyone knows about it, please tell! In particular I remember that the London opts came from Thames even though the Telethon actually happened at the weekend (ie LWT time). Although I was watching in the Central region where we had some fantastic local stuff presented from the National Indoor Arena in 1992 by Bob Warman and lots of other people...

True, I may be wrong but I think it was the only time that "ITV" actually ever made a programme as I am fairly certain the end cap said:
"An Independent Television Production"
Also I think its probably the only time that ALL the ITV regions used some form of ITV branding during the regional service???

By monopolising I take it you mean actually doing something?!
Children in Need has been running on TV since the very early 80s, and has its routes in a 1920s TV appeal....
BTW - is it pure co-incidence that the ITV Telethons stopped when the last franchise round had taken place?

Well the ITV Year of Promise didn't do very well, and what with the BBC monopolising charity stuff (such as introducing Sport Relief), viewers are probably bored of this sort of thing

Ahh, the Central Cake - good to see it again! And the good old '021' numbers!! Excuse me while I reminisce.....
Ahem.. Anyway....!!
Yes, It should return! It was much better than BBC's Children In Need or Comic Relief. Living in the Midlands Region - I can only sit and cringe at BBC CIN - apologies to fans of Pebble Mill - but my god they are crap at live programmes! Each and every time they 'went regional' you could 100% guarantee that there would be a big cock-up!
The ITV Telethon was much better produced and actually worked well - it was fun too! And to put the cherry on the [central] cake (!) - the music was the best!! It was so catchy!!
Bring Back the ITV Telethon! (Although, knowing the new look ITV, I have no doubt that it would be entirely London based, no regional sections at all, and interrupted by 10 episodes of Corrie.... Hmm Great!)

Apologies... Shefali is the only exception! God bless her! Sue Beardsmore did try her best - but she just never did it for me!!

Great show, and why on earth they axed it, I'll never know. The only problem is, it'd highlight the de-regionalisation of ITV, and therefore, might make certain people (all memebers of TV Forum), march on Gray's Inn Road, like a group of vigilantes...
I hosted the Central Televison Roadshow from Sutton Park in Birmingham on the day of the first Telethon; guests included Diana Moran (The Green Goddess), Grotbags the Witch (!), Bob Holness, Gary Terzza (Then Childrens' ITV, now continuity announcer for Channel 4 and Granada Plus), and, God bless her, Marti Caine.
Marvellous days...
Oh, and one final point - Mr Aspel wasn't on screen for 18 hours - it was TWENTY SEVEN!!!!!!!!
