Would this not also pave the way to drop the ITV Morning News, as ITV can now say they will do more news between 6 and 7?
I would imagine it's highly likely the GMTV Newshour and the ITV Morning News will be merged in one way or another - I certainly expect ITN to take over the news provision for GMTV, but of course there are contracts in place with Reuters and they will need to expire first.
This was inevitable really, and I though I'm sure GMTV will remain as a programme name, I think GMTV2 will be scrapped (so ITV4 won't screen CITV in the morning), and as others have said the weekend shows will come under the CITV banner. Wouldn't surprise me either to see Lorraine Kelly billed separately in listings too.
Well with ITV now fully owning GMTV, it makes sense that GMTV become a programming section in ITV1's Schedule, and if ITV now can control their schedule and run 24/7 like other stations, it makes sense that UTV, STV Channel Islands, all control their full 24/7 schedules, and if they want to opt into the Morning Programme "GMTV" then let them, or let them run their own.
Also if they have ITV News updates, they could add local opt outs for regional news.
STV could say No and want to start at 09.25 that is when stv and UTV starts up, do you think there going to let ITV losse them ad money at that time?
STV have no control over 6am-9.25am and can't say no. In theory ITV can rebrand GMTV as ITV1 which will cause all sorts of problems for STV (and to a lesser extent UTV, although they have very similar branding anyway).
that was not my point; I can just see it now: itv has a Morning show form 6am - 9.30am but at 09.25 on the DOT. feed get axed and STV comes on air

Im sure ITV can only do so much as the License gives them a duty to provide programming for all Channel 3 stations and not just ITV plc regions, so they would have to agree with all Channel 3 License holders if they wanted to change the timings of GMTV.
Indeed the 9.25am junction exists for legal reasons not practical ones.
To be fair, I can't imagine STV and UTV being bothered if it became the much more logical 9.30am junction as long as the distribution of ad breaks didn't change.

I can't really see much changing, plus if they do extend it to 9.30am which STV disagree with there will probably be some kind of agreement to end the show at 9.25am on the dot for STV to opt out and adverts until 9.30am in non-STV regions.
There is no reason to change the 9.25am start just for the sake of it - as long as Jeremy Kyle is around, I think that time will stay.
Opting out is an interesting idea - indeed arguably Breakfast is one area where STV opting out really could serve the Scottish audience, rather than deprive them of shows they don't want to pay for.
I know Ofcom have pulled rabbits out of the hat in connection with the ITV Regions, but any change to the Breakfast Franchise Terms would require Primary legislation.

Back in 1991 the ITC looked carefully into whether a breakfast franchise was needed and, if so, what its hours should be. It was under no obligation to make the contract a 7 day one running 0600 to 0925.
I rather suspect the crucial issue will be the amount of advertising on each side of the 0925 split - not the precise time. We sometimes forget that the Thames/LWT handover changed from 5.15pm to 5.10pm in 1989.
Ofcom has already proposed that each C3 licence should be 24 hour from 2014.
I tend to agree though that, in practice, the components of GMTV will simply become programmes on ITV1 or normal strands like CITV. In practice, it'll be ITV1 broadcasting to the whole UK in the early morning, whatever the legalities. GMTV could well stay as the name of the main programme - but what's the bet on Good Morning Britain or maybe even Good Morning from ITV??!!

Well, the official changeover didn't change, it was the junction that moved back 5 minutes along with the news (which started went from 5:45 to 5:40). However advertising wasn't a factor then as the first ad break was 10 minutes into LWTs time. The situation continued with Carlton.

The breakfast license is an anomoly that should really have been discontinued years ago, as the weekend license effectively was. This move today makes it fairly easy, much more so than if there was a totally separate licensee as in TVam's days
Indeed, the official handover could remain 9.25am... but in practice changing the junction time is easier. (STV and UTV could just pull of Lorraine mid sentence if they really wanted to!!)
