The scheduling of the 2003 rugby world cup, and of far eastern Formula one races, meant that GMTV had to be given a time slot later in the morning. This acquisition will give ITV greater flexibility of scheduling, especially if it shows the 2011 RWC. This is being held in New Zealand, so many games will be in the wee small hours.
The deal also means that ITv will be able to fully control advertising sales on ITV2, 3, 4, and CITV channel. Previously, between 06:00 and 09:25, GMTV done this, a move designed by ITV to prevent concerns being raised by Disney, that especially CITV would compete with GMTV kids shows in the morning.
As regards the GMTV news, I think it's almost inevitable that this will come to an end, as ITN has greater resources, more studios, and in effect, the GMTV news operations will be seen as a wasteful duplication of resources. When that change takes place, remains to be seen. I presume though that such news broadcasts will probably come from the ITN studios, as opposed to the South Bank studios of GMTV.

Would this not also pave the way to drop the ITV Morning News, as ITV can now say they will do more news between 6 and 7?

Just as interesting will be to see if GMTV's news operation at The South Bank is merged or replaced by a more ITN resourced operation at Gray's Inn Road.
I wouldn't be surprised to see ITV sell their South Bank building at some point in the future...
that would be pointless! where would ITV make half of there show? Kent house also make money as there rent out the studios to a lot or people

Errm. Not to sound rude, but how about the 9 studio centres across England and Wales?
3 Studios at Gas Street are unused.
Add on Granada.

Er, unlikely. ITV Network Centre has only just moved from Gray's Inn Road to TLS.
Come to think of it - couldn't they move GMTV to Gray's Inn Road if they wanted to now? (Not saying they will or that it makes sense to - just that it would be easier now). That would also allow it to close the loss-making TLS and sell off some very expensive real estate with far smaller an impact on output ? *(Particularly since playout has moved out already?)

Key thing to remember is that ITV own South Bank, whereas they rent space in GIR. So over time, with ever-decreasing numbers of employees, I'd expect much of the movement to be south of the river. Doesn't stop them selling off the studio complex if they fancy it, but it seems to be keeping pretty busy at the moment.

Jeremy Kyle? Can't we keep that gutter-based, lowest common denominator, pi$$ poor excuse for a programme off the main channels?
This morning should take on GMTV, and then go from 6 to 12, and it should incorporate news, jeremy kyle, cooking, soaps, gossip, and user participation, and become like the NBC Today Show, and have a live outside street view

I hope that is true, I figured ITV would be desperate to keep the show going. Even if they made these changes, I still wouldn't watch ITV. The only time I would watch ITV is when Law & Order UK returns, When the newest Poirot is showing, and if they ever brought Afterlife back for a 3rd series.

ITV appear to be upgrading TLS Studio 1 and 2 to HD (they've just announced a £2m spend on new kit) - so that may mean closure is less likely (but stranger things have happened... Pebble Mill had just upgraded its main studio for full digital widescreen, and within months it had been closed)
