If there are still notions of an ITV takeover then who would be in the best position to do so?

IF anyone wonders where this has come from...

Understand that in the lead up to the Amsterdam IBC conference the prospect of an ITV takeover has been raised.

If EE can be bought by BT, then I wonder if it's likely ITV will be gobbled up too? After all even though BT is in TV, it's pay per view while ITV is free to air. Wonder what might have to give for such a deal to happen? Extra PSB on ITV? Stronger Contract Rights Renewal? This could be fascinating...or not.

EE isn't ITV though. BT buying ITV isn't something I can see being in their business plan - but C4 on the otherhand seems a much better fit if it ever is privatised.

Isn't Liberty Media favourite to buy ITV if it happens? I'd have thought a takeover is much less likely than it was 10 years ago

Brexit and the fall of the pound may have made this a tad more likely. Doesn't ITV now have a fairly big web of production companies in the US and Australia as well

I'd agree, BT have the funds to actually build on their content, but I can't see them buying ITV to bolster this, more or less developing their new entertainment channel instead.

I'm not sure about Liberty Media. They've already got Virgin and have just added F1. The thing is if ITV was bought then the PSB issue would be huge.

I don't think it would actually, especially if bought from abroad. There is still a considerable value in PSB which would be a large part of the reason anyone would buy ITV so I don't think anyone seriously interested in ITV as a broadcaster would look to get out of it.

It's worth noting that with both Northern and Shell and also Viacom there has been no attempt to get out of C5's PSB commitments to childrens programming and news - indeed surprisingly under Northenr and Shell both elements were arguably strengthened.

There are two companies called Liberty, both controlled by John C Malone. There is a US based media firm called Liberty Media Corporation and a UK based cable company called Liberty Global Plc. The former is trying to take over F1, the latter is the company that owns Virgin Media. Obviously given their common control by Malone, there is some overlap in directors of both companies.
