ITV is set to switch off all seven of its channels for one hour to encourage the nation to take part in the UK’s ‘biggest ever sports day’ after the Rio 2016 Olympic Games wrap up.

The sports day event has been created in conjunction with the British Olympic Association (BOA), UK Sport and supported by Join In, and will take place on 27 August, a week after the end of the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

The event has been designed to get the nation involved in sports by giving the public the opportunity to come together with Olympic heroes and famous faces from ITV on the day. Thousands of clubs across the UK will allow members of the public to participate in a wide range of sports free of charge on the day.

They've been encouraging people to turn off ITV at 9.30am for years.

Is this a bit like Nickelodeon's Worldwide* Day of Play?

*by 'Worldwide' they actually mean the US

What a pointless gimmick.

People inclined to watch ITV at 9.30am are more likely to pick one of the other hundreds of channels available whilst sat on the couch eating a doughnut than go out and have a run.

Probaly more apt to say . . .

"People inclined to watch ITV at 9.30am are more likely to pick one of the other hundreds of channels available whilst sat on the couch smoking weed and/or drinking extra strong white "cider", than go out and have a run!"

The 27th is a Saturday when they'd schedule Murder She Wrote or a Jeremy Kyle repeat. So hardly that generous.

Well that's all of us glued to our screens for an hour then, just in case something interesting happens. Well done, ITV Rolling Eyes

If they do something similar to when E4 went off air on the day of the general election, with something actually happening on screen, we very well may just do that

If it was the BBC doing this as part of the 'get inspired' thing, then it would be a great idea.

(Although it would give the anti-BBC press a 'why can't they switch off all the channels and not come back shtick)

But ITV is an odd one. Suppose getting the nation off the settee, and standing around watching other people doing some sport, ticks the social action box on the PSB requirements..
..or by piggybacking off the back of Rio 2016, could be seen as seductively fluttering their eyelashes to Discovery Eurosport, in case the BBC throw in the Olympic coverage broadcaster towel before Tokyo 2020.

That would make sense considering Text Santa will not be returning this year.

They could let the meerkats run the hour the ITV channels are off air.

How will they handle the +1 channels? Closing them an hour later defeats the purpose.
