Just to say that the classroom where we had Welsh lessons in school was next door to the resources office whose job, among other things, was to record the schools programmes, so every twenty minutes or so during Welsh lessons we'd hear the C4 schools music drifting through the wall. I really loved the music so I used to enjoy Welsh lessons for that reason. Er, apart from when they were in the afternoon.

Talking of Welsh lessons what did S4C do during the ITV Schools era. I know certainly once they became C4 schools the S4C version carried it's own branding and numerous Welsh shows too, but what about before 1992. Also did S4C sell it's own advertising in it's first decade or like C4 did ITV (presumably HTV) do that for it?

Great couple of clips just on the previous page.

The unidentified track has that certain quintessential interval music sound of the era and fits right in ahead of the ITV Schools start proper... It seems to complement The Journey quite well.

In a wider sense, I'd also plonk it in the same style bracket as 'Against The Clock' - the track famously used during breakdowns by the BBC. Sort of like its major-key cousin!

S4C simply used to the ITV on 4 rotomotion between 87 and 93, but they I believe generated their own captions at th bottom and the S4C logo appeared on the bottom right of the screen. For Welsh Language shows instead of rotating ITV's, you'd get a rotating S4C with the word YSGOLION underneath the roto, with The Joruney and Just a Minute played where appropriate. YouTube is your friend for this, there's plenty evidence of this.

As for advertising S4C I believe ran the same as C4, with HTV Wales and TV-am selling the airtime on the channel.

IIRC S4C was controlled and regulated by the WAG, not the IBA; I always assumed that meant HTV had no role beyond providing content.

The WAG which came into existence in 1999?

As I recall, S4C is controlled by the S4C Authority.

And as I've stated and linked on the facebook group, The Journey lives on! I'm a fan of Australian V8 Supercars, and on youtube I do regular updates throughout the season, called V8 Special. And, I chose The Journey as the theme since the show started in 2007. Check this example out, where at the end, you hear much more of The Journey, principally as I've got the revised calendar for the rest of the season, and also the photos of the drivers who won races at the Hamilton Street Circuit, Hamilton New Zealand!

I thought S4C's revenue came out of C4's pot ? All the ITV companies had to fill that pot, and in return they sold, and kept the advertising revenue for the C4/S4C breaks in their own regions ?

So HTV sold the spots on S4C, but did not directly finance it, in effect S4C had to be subsidised by the whole ITV network, the advertising revenue generated purely in Wales would not have been enough ?

The WAG and the IBA never existed at the same time.

IBA = good old days

WAG = awful truth that is today

I used to love the ITV Schools on C4 era. I was in Primary School when that started. The music and idents were amazing.

Yes S4C used to sometimes have the S4C logo at the bottom right hand corner where the 4 logo usually was, this was mainly for the first programme of the day where S4C would start off the countdown at their own pace not necesarily in line with C4, and if an English programme followed a Welsh programme and therefore the countdown may not be in line with C4 they used to have their own version then, but otherwise they would mainly just play the C4 feed and have the 4 logo at the bottom.

When Welsh programmes were broadcast then the S4C would be the big logo on the screen replacing the ITV (with YSGOLION under it) and no logo at the bottom right hand corner. If the final programme of the day was a Welsh programme then the schools closedown would be done in Welsh with the S4C/Ysgolion etc.

When it changed to 4 Schools in 1993 then S4C used their own presentation package which was rather good compared to what C4 had. One annoying thing was they obviously used a C4 feed for the programmes as often you would see the last few seconds (or even a fraction of a second) of the C4 countdown on S4C.
