Tyne Tees used a 2" analogue cart system, the exact model of which I don't know but it was installed in the very early 1980s, possibly 1981. For a while they'd run the first half of the break from videotape, and the second from telecine.

This system was only capable of mono sound, and was quite 'noisy'. TTTV retained the same system right up until the end of 1992. I think it may be the case that they only had a single automation unit, and dubbed C4 ads to a continuous tape, which was run automated from transmission.

No promos or idents were ever run from this system. Transmission had, IIRC, four VTR machines, all analogue; one dedicated to C4, one rolling part-time for Bilsdale opts, the other being run for promos and, later, idents. These machines (apart from the C4 one) were not automated, and right up until the end of 1992 all promos were played out manually (and not scheduled -- TTTV would decide on the fly between the controller and announcer where promos would be played and fill the gaps with all-live material).

No upgrade to digital was ever carried out, and right up to March 1996 TTTV were still playing idents, occasional promos and the top/tail of "Lookaround" out live from one of these VTRs, now under the direct control of the announcer.

I think the VTRs were newer than the ad playout system, because they were stereo capable -- all ads up to 1993 were in mono in the TTTV region.

A quick glance through the IBA year book in 1982 makes no mention of any cart playout system, but the 1983 yearbook makes mention that TTTV have 'two Bosch computerised multicassete VTR's'. Do you think these are the machine(s) you remember? they would have been 1" B format of course, but it was along time ago and I know myself it can be difficult to remember after all this time.

Let us not forget the Sony Betacart in all of this. Sony support said to us that it was the worst bit of kit they ever made - it was so utterly reliable (if you maintained it) that it never went wrong and there was not much in the way of post-sales income!

Apart from Betacam tapes Smile (Which were always the 'cash cow' for Sony for over 20 years anyway)

LNN adopting SX was done in conjunction with having a Sony Newsbase server based production system installed, that replaced (eventually) the Betacart in their News studio. None of it lasted very long, only a few years before London news moved over to ITN.

Here's a short article about LNN adopting Newbase:

I wonder what happened to that Betacart? I'm racking my brains but can't remember - spares maybe? GMTV used to use a second hand one but I think that had been de-commisioned before LNN's?

Something in the back of my mind says it ended up at Meridian at New Hythe for spares ?

Yes, could be, I will be seeing some ex- Meridian people in a couple of weeks time, I will ask if I can remember.

LNN's Betacart definately went to Meridian, I was one of the last people to use it!

Don't quote me on this, because I really don't know and might be totally wrong (I have been once already on this one Laughing ), but having had a look at the Bosch devices available at the time the Bosch BCN-100 seems to ring a few bells (i.e. it looks vaguely familiar). I do not know where I got the 2" business from -- I was just an interested kid at the time and it may be that something else was 2", I'm not sure.

I last saw Anglia's MARC machine being used to play into their regional news programme, Not sure what year that would have been, certainly post 1986, could it have been in the 90's even - it was installed in the studio that was originally a bowling alley.

Think they were still using MARC well into the 90s - c.1997 at least?

Thames' MARC machines (one was used for Thames, the other for Channel 4's) went over to Teddington after Euston closed. One was in use for UK Living until about 1997 when their playout operation moved over to the new Pearson TV HQ in Stephen Street.
