Any idea why World in Action and Playhouse would have started five minutes later in Westward and Midlands?

TSW's listings in the 1980s would always give the start time for programmes after News At Ten as '10:34', because that was actually the start time. All other regions would publish that time as '10:30'. Whatever went out in that slot was always exactly simulcast on TSW and the rest of the network. I suspect a similar case therefore regarding your question.

I was surprised to read that The Young Doctors ran for so long in some regions. I can't remember the series still being on Central by the early 90s. ITV must have bought the series late, as I know if finished in Australia in the early 80s.

I only remembered this week that when I went on holiday as a kid in the late 80s I would always see Gus Honeybun on TSW. I don't think a slot for viewers' birthdays was a regular feature in most regions, was it? I never remember the Central region having one.

The Young Doctors was shown in the UK from 1982 I think - Central were the first region to screen it and the first to complete. Took most regions around 10 years to show it all - some didn't finish until 1995.

Its even more surprising that HTV/Westcountry and other were still showing The Sullivans in the early to Mid 1990s especially as it was first shown in 1977 (possibly networked in the very beginning?) - that's over twice the length of its original run!

Birthday slot was still going in Borders and even the new Westcountry.

Grampain had it in 1993 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-j79Tq_8vQ

Original run in the land of OZ was only 5-6 years, so it would x4 the original run Wink

yes it was networked to start with I believe 12.30 slot.

Channel and UTV are the only regions to still have birthday greetings slots - with Puffin's Plaice and Buska and Barney respectively.

Speaking of UTV, according to Wikipedia, of the regions that took "The Young Doctors", UTV treated it most harshly - only showing a small number of episodes before dropping them for lengths of time, and they only ever showed about 150-200 episodes - I can only remember them showing episodes with the first title sequence/theme tune at the time (the one with the pan shot following the doctors into the operating theatre).

Buska and Barney are no more, are they not? Sure they were dropped end of last year.

Just reading some of the earlier posts about Prisoner Cell Block H, just before the showing of the very last episode, Grampian spared no expense, and the continuity announcer ( can't remember who it was ) had a chat with Bea on the phone on air!

Granada did it aswell, but with Maggie who was in oz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qg_-N3204c

its a shame the Grampians version is not around.

One of my earliest regional Grampian memories was a Saturday morning children's Gaelic show called Cuir Cah ( excuse my spelling and anyone who speaks the language can correct me! ). It featured cartoons presumably in Gaelic, but I'm talking cartoons of the East European variety not your Disney fare! I presume the title had something to do with drawing a circle, because the two presenters used to chant " Cuir Cah, cuir cah, cuir cah " until the cartoon " faded in ". BBC Scotland eventually responed by showing " Mag is Mog " which I believe featured Runrig nearly every week, on a Saturday pre Swap Shop / Superstore.

AT LAST some one has been able to explain what on earth this show was about, I keep seeing this listed most Saturday mornings 78 - 80 at 09.05am for 25mins.

The Grampian version, was the same one as Granada/Border, it wasn't with Bea Smith but the same interview with Maggie. The interview was recorded at Border's radio station, CFM, and offered to the company's Border had releationships with - at the time Granada provided Border's transmission and some of its scheduling, and Border provided Grampians presentation stuff and promotions.
The interview was recorded, and then suppliedto Granada and Grampian, who dropped in their local announcer to ask the questions, it was Craig Austin in Border land, John MacKenzie in Granada land, and Scott Brown in Grampian.
The Border version was the funniest, they left in some of the funnier questions.
The rationale behind it was quite simple, Border had dispensed with the previous Head of Scheduling, who tried to lamely cover up the 120-odd missing episodes. After her departure, the new Head of Scheduling thought viewers needed to know that the series had actually ended rather than been axed, and the rest is history !

It is interesting to hear that UTV still has the Birthdays slot. I'll look on the net for these characters Buska and Barney to see if they are still on - I have been on UTV's website a few time sin the past but haven't seen anything about Birthdays.
