Do they ? They don't on East, they have that generic image of those screens with "Calendar" on them the whole time. Do they have images for the Leeds opt ? If so, why ?
From The TV Room, this is what it looks like:

Anyone know why this is a Leeds only thing then, and why it doesn't happen on East ? I presume it doesn't happen for South either.

On Calendar's local CSO studios, when they're doing the local bulletins during the 6pm Calendar, they show pictures next to the presenter to go with the news item.

Well, pretty well every broadcast vision mixer around these days can do at least 2 keys on each mix-effects bank (some do 3 or 4), so there is no more chance of a cock-up when cutting from a source with 2 keys on it to a VT than from a source with only one key on it.
Even if you haven't got a mixer that can cope with lots of keys on one bank then you can either use a second bank to create the background. which is then keyed on a different bank, or get graphics to generate a composite background...
Indeed - it's just far too easy these days! Anyone else remember the old BBC-designed vision mixers with one fader per channel like sound mixing desks??
Yep - with Quadrant faders... (Though I never had to use them in anger - I do remember seeing them)

I would guess that the images are done on the CSO, because then when the vision mixer cuts away from the CSO source to VT (for example) they don't also have to remove an overlay at the same time, so less chance of cockups

Sounds right, East comes from Hull.

Leeds is going through the main gallery and the other two versions aren't?

Do YTV have studios and galleries (and editing and graphics) in Hull and Sheffield for their Calendar sub-opts - or are they done from Leeds (or from remote studios working into galleries in Leeds)?

Like the one from the Broomcupboard, NC1? Near the bottom of this page
It's actually the one in the B&W picture above the picture of the NC1 mixer. It's captioned 'BBC Control Gallery / mixer used during the recording of Z Cars in the late sixties'.
In 1990 there were still three of these type of mixers in use in Television Centre, in TC6, TC7 and TC8.
