ITV Regional announcers (2001-Oct 2002)

Dropped in place of London announcers? (July 2012)

Before regional stations were dropped in October 2002, were the regional announcers being dropped prior to this? Because I've found a clip on a tape from Anglia leading into Plain Jane (27th May 2002) with a London pre-recorded announcer rather than using a announcer from that area. Did other regions have this? I know Carlton/Central didn't.

HTV didn't either,

Neither did Yorkshire (and thus presumably Tyne Tees, Granada and Border). Our announcers only disappeared when the hearts idents did.

Central kept theirs until 2004 and 5 - though 2005 really was approaching the end!

Can I ask how you know it was a London announcer? Anglia announcements were coming from Meridian at that time.

Because when ITV1 replaced the regoinal stations in Oct 2002, this particular announcer was one of the 'new' announcers. Because ITV1 was based in London, I thought all the announcers they had at the start had been announcing LWT before that.

I'm pretty sure one of them came from Meridian - which would explain their appearance on Anglia, as presumably they were still working there.

I don't think any of the LWT regulars transferred full time, although didn't Trish Bertram do some freelance?

Two of the announcers who previously worked from Southampton and heard on Meridian, Anglia and HTV West; Graham Rogers and Paul Seed, became ITV network announcers in October 2002.

Both Trish Bertram and Glen Thompsett did relief shifts on the network for a year or so.

I'm confused by this comment - I thought only Wales kept local announcers after 2002. Are you referring to regional announcements (although I believe even these were recorded by LNN/ITV1 announcers)?

Centre even opted out during the night until 2005.

In response to Mike W, from what I've heard, Central still had their own voiceovers for their local trails until around 2004 (when they started to properly crack down on regional programming) although from my own knowledge all the regional announcements from 2002 right until they finished with the opt outs in 2006/2007 were from London. Sometimes they would have a pre recorded announcement introducing a regional programme, but most of the time it was just the same announcement aired across all the other regions.

Now come to think of it, I don't see why they didn't save jobs by retaining the northern continuity team and Central's continuity team, with Central providing continuity to, say, HTV West and Anglia, and London providing continuity to themselves, Meridian and Westcountry (whilst retaining ITV1 branding at the same time).

I was always lead to believe Central kept hold of Fraser Shepherd and made him do live announcements into regional programming as late as 2005
