ITV abandons the South Bank

In terms of studio space, there is no further studio space available at ITN. They have only four main studios. Studio 1 and 2 in the basement are used for the ITV National News, ITV News London and Channel 5 News with the Channel 4 News based in their atrium view studio. Along with a small CSO studio for emergency, there is not really any more studio facilities at ITN, so it makes sense that it is just office based staff and departments which could move into Gray's Inn Road.

ITV Daytime's new office in WestWorks is looking more or less ready to move into. It is a bit weird seeing a big ITV logo clearly visible in a window of the old BBC building.

As far as I know there are currently 3 TV studios at ITN. Studio 1 (ITV), Studio 2 (C5 & The Wright Stuff) and Studio 6 (C4). Don't know what you mean by a small CSO studio for emegencies - I've certainly never seen one unless it's very new. Not something I've heard about though. Unless you mean Millbank?


Although the rest of the space is mostly offices and control rooms, that's not to say that they couldn't create new studio space if they needed to. Studio 5 and PCR5 that were originally for 5 News in 1997 had been completely removed. But that didn't stop them re-creating PCR5 when 5 News moved back in 2016. And in fact it's now in the basement of the adjoining building rather than 200 GIR.

I think a distinction also needs to be drawn between ITN and 200 GIR (http://www.200gir.com). When it was built, ITN owned the whole building. But that's not the case anymore - many other unrelated companies are housed in 200 GIR. ITV have/had some management offices higher up the building, not connected to ITN. Anything moving from TLS may potentially end up on a floor that isn't owned by ITN. Remember, ITN is a separate company whose client is ITV.

No it was Susanna's last day in the studio.

I thought there was a small CSO studio at ITN. One camera locked shot, originally used for the ITV News Channel when they got chucked out of the main studio whilst ITV National News rehearsed in around 2004.

No those were the two basement studios that were used back then.

And used for ITV News Summaries on ITV1 at the same time.

They were assumed to be different than the ITV London studio as didn’t they have different presenters in those days?

The old ITV London studio was Studio 4 alongside the atrium on the ground floor next to the ITV newsroom (also used to be home of the ITN News Channel and before that the main daytime ITV bulletins, although I think it might have been called Studio 3 at that time). Once ITV London moved to the basement and shared the same studio as the national ITV News, Studio 4 was completely removed and there is nothing left of it now. Its control room was PCR2 (PCR4 in the News Channel days) which has now been effectively relocated to the basement. I don't think PCR2 is used much now - it's kind of a back-up control room. It had a short spell of being used when 5 News moved back to GIR in late 2016 while PCR5 was being (re-)built. PCR4 is also long gone (that control room also had a spell of producing 5 News when it initially moved back to ITN in 2012).

At one point in the early 2000's, ITN had and actively used a total of 5 studios and control rooms in the days when it was producing ITV News, News Channel, London News, Channel 4 News and 5 News (plus stuff like Sunset and Vine overnight American sports shows). It's a bit of a shame to think that now there are only 3 studios and 4 control rooms left.

NBC also has built a small decent sized insert studio that has comfortably accomodated atleast two people. I believe it has a 3x3 (or 4x4) monitor wall along with monitors on a wall perpendicular to it. It’s not used all the time as the flash cam is used mainly.

I agree. A nice real set for a change and replace that hideous lego monolith desk. Compared to GMB, ITV News looks cold and sounds brasy.
