They haven't used 'Yorkshire' for a while. The drop down list on the ITV News website was always 'Anglia... Border.. Calendar.. Central etc' for example.

It seems to me regions that had a distinctive name has kept it, regions that were just called [Region] Tonight, have dropped the Tonight.

Names like Central Tonight and Anglia Tonight are relatively short lived are they not anyway? Central was traditionally 'Central News at Six'?

This is my verdict on what I've seen so far...

ITV - The music is much better and varied than the previous ITV1 idents. The idents themselves I feel are ok to good, I especially like the 'Pugwash' one. As someone stated it makes the BBC look dated when compared. Not sure if I like the announcers style though...not sure it suits the main channel.

ITV News - Much better than the previous yellow crap. Really like the new look. The News At Ten titles are excellent, looking into the future while embracing ITV/ITN's proud history.

Regional News (Central) - The music and titles are excellent, now for me they just need more relevant content. My views on the current merged programme are well known.

Generally well done ITV...now it's time for the actual programming to be refreshed, though it must be said they have spent many millions on Drama in recent history.

London Tonight has been around for 20 years and 10 days as of today.

A tweet from people in the idents seems to suggest they'll be around for four years.

There's a very good reason for that. "ITV News Yorkshire" would be completely inaccurate. The ex-YTV area covers a hell of a lot more than just Yorkshire - there's Lincolnshire, North Norfolk, parts of Nottinghamshire, etc. The Calendar brand solves all the problems in an instant.

As you yourself have acknowledged, it was equally inaccurate to have 'Yorkshire Television' spending most of it's existance A) broadcasting to Lincolnshire aswell and B) not actually covering the whole of Yorkshire, but that went along fine.

I still find it odd that ITV towers managed to allow a name completely routed in regional ITV to survive in the brave new world whilst all other remaining regional brands were removed today. Even if they wanted to acknowledge that the 'Yorkshire' region extends way further South than Yorkshire you'd have expected them to come up with some other more santised name rather than carrying on with a YTV brand name.

Especially when Calendar's survival comes on the same day that the 'West' region has ended up with the ridiculous name of 'West Country (East)'.

It's not that I resent Calendar surviving - I'm glad that something from the regional system has managed to make it into the 2013 rebrand, I just find it odd that the one regional news title which managed to survive is truly a product of the past - a true regional brand which didn't feel the need to directly quote the region name in its title.

It's a bit like the BBC renaming it's regional news programmes to 'BBC News + Region name' - except for Spotlight and Newsline.

It might just be because it's the first day of the new look, but does anyone else think the announcers are given longer to speak on idents now?

Previously, it would be rare an ident would last more than about 10 seconds, now they seem to last closer to 20 seconds.

This is all so dated anyway, no other country apart from Ireland has them

Nope The Netherlands still have channnel idents as well - in fact RTL Nederlands just changed more recently to reflect the demography ot the channels. Ned channels still have idents before programmes.

All remaining regional brands removed?
They've kept Meridian, Central, Granada etc etc they could just as easy have been South, Midlands, North West. Meridian in particular is a product from a bygone era. Which would have been the same thing as scrapping Calendar and keeping Yorkshire.

Tyne Tees has actually come back replacing North East. They've kept Lookaround.

I agree. Only real casualties are London & West. West has ended up with a ridiculous name in West Country (East)!

Well they win the award for the most discrete DOG on TV. It's so discrete that it might as well not be there. (Not that I want it to be more obvious)
