'ITV' Question

Question:
Do 'I.T.V.plc' operate the other 'ITV' channels under contract FOR Channel 3 Network, or do they do it because they want to? Remember that 'I.T.V.plc' is not the real ITV, but just a contractor for broadcast in many of the franchise regions.
Who operated 'S2'?
Also, who operated the other channels before the 'I.T.V.plc' merger? Was it just 'Carlton', or 'Granada', or a combined effort, or what?

ITV Plc operate all franchises in England, Wales, IOM and S Scotland. STV and Grampian are transmitted from Glasgow by SMG. UTV and Channel are independent and so deal with themselves, though Channel takes a Meridian feed much of the time.

A 'clean' feed is used by the non-ITV Plc. channels without any "ITV1" presentation.

I'm not sure about the reasoning behind why ITV Plc. broadcast the programmes - but they are the biggest company, and the best equipped. I don't think they actually get anything for it though!

S2 was the Scottish equivelant of ITV2 broadcast by STV/Grampian. UTV had their own as well - I belive this was called You TV.

Before ITV Plc. was formed I belive the transmission was in the hands of LWT/LNN. Certainly something from the South Bank. Years ago the programmes were broadcast by the station which made/commisionned it, then sent down to (this is what I've read) the PO Tower, where it was sent to all stations.

Totally off topic but is there any reason why everytime you mention BBC or ITV you have to type it L.I.K.E T.H.I.S?

Sorry, I worded it unclearly. By "other ITV channels", I mean 'I.T.V.2., I.T.V.3. etc.'.

They are acroynms like
Deoxyribonuclaicacid (?) ==> D.N.A.
British Broadcasting Corporation ==> BBC
Independent Television ==> ITV
Independent Television News ==> I.T.N. / ITV News.

Oh leave it alone. It's the posters personal preference to use the form A.B.C. in writing acronyms. The form ABC may be more common nowadays then A.B.C. but that hasn't made use of the latter illegal.

No, an acronym is an abbreviation which is pronounced as if it were a word - such as N.A.T.O. = Nato

It is correct to write BBC as BBC as it is an abbreviation, but in recent years this practice seems to have disappeared because it looks stupid! (Full stops are even left off some sentences in adverts and promotional documents etc now because they look untidy!)

Stick to BBC, ITV, ITN and DNA if I were you!

None of those are acronyms. They are initials.
Nato is an acronym. BBC is not.

Nice try, but NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Indeed it does. I never claimed it didn't.

But Nato is (usually) pronounced as "a word formed from the initial letters of a name" - making it an acronym - whereas BBC, ITN, ITV etc are pronounced as initials.

I'm slightly amused that D.A.S. is getting involved in this discussion at all.

Oh. Well ITV2 and ITV3 don't have anything to do with SMG, UTV or Channel.
