One report I had heard is that Granada only kept its franchise because the ITC thought that losing both Granada and Thames at the same time would fatally hurt ITV. Not sure to what extent that was true.

There's a lot of truth to that, from things I've heard over the years. And Granada made it no secret that if they lost, they'd take their programmes to the highest bidder. In fact at one stage, Granada and LWT were considering not bidding as a protest against the unfair system. That's what got the 'Quality Threshold' condition introduced (which is how both won their franchises, funnily enough)

Though even with "quality threshold", the system was still a joke really.

What's up with these weird freeview adverts? Is the voice over live? I don't see a point in them myself.

The whole point of these new Freeview adverts is to show to viewers that there is an alternative to Sky, Virgin and BT. Hence the slogan - 'The Other Way'.

It feels like an attempt to catch the viewers attention. The ads all blend into one - until one advert starts talking about the program that's currently on.

I really hope they don't end up over-Americanising it all.

Bringing this post back up the line Laughing , I notice they seemed to have dropped the "ITV Where Drama Lives" promo's we haven't had one since last year Shocked . Shame as I myself kind of liked the new promos every season to see what was coming on to our screens soon.

It was, but in a strange way what it did was prepare ITV for all the things the 90s/00s would throw at it. And I'm not sure things would have been much different now had the system been different.

Would TSW or TV-am have retained huge premises as increased competition squeezed budgets, or would they have downsized to a science park or hired space out at LWT respectively? Would TVS have avoided bankruptcy? Would Thames have been able to fight off a takeover bid from Carlton or Granada?
