Considering the idents change weekly Tuesday would seem an odd day to do it.

Are we expecting them to do a BBC One and launch at the first junction after the bongs or as it's only a news bulletin that may not bring in the viewers will they leave it until 9:25am?

It is hard to judge, as their last new look in 2013 was not launched on New Year's Day but later in 2013. Also most viewers will be watching BBC One and ITV do not bother with New Year's Eve live programming anymore. Does anyone remember the last time they had a proper live event show which was not a simple ITV News bulletin leading into midnight?

I think it is because it is New Year's Day

I believe it was in 2007, when they showed a live Take That concert from the O2.

So a decade of not bothering.

I don't think the Take That concert got very good ratings, which is why they haven't done anything like that since.

Didn't they do two (possibly Elton John?) but then the year after the BBC picked up the idea and it's been that way ever since.

Should ITV bother again? To offer an alternative?

But does anyone actually actively watch these shows? Wherever I've been, it's usually only a background to everyone well-wishing and getting somewhat merry (-ier)!

There is an audience, not everyone wants to be out and about celebrating the new year. Most are knackered after Christmas, and so would like something decent to watch with and family and a few friends in the comfort of their home.

New Year's Eve 2014 BBC One's Adam Lambert and Queen Rock Big Ben attracted 5.8 million leading up to Midnight, and over 10 million after midnight. So with the right programme, there is an audience I think.

One of the BBCs recent new years shows was the most watched programme of that year. Unfortunately the title had already been given to the second most popular, and of course only half of it counted
