Controversial late night quiz show ITV Play appears to be heading for the chop after the furore over rigged competitions and impossible questions cost the broadcaster more than £19m in the first half.

ITV chairman Michael Grade insists: 'It will be a business decision. It will be about whether or not we are getting a sufficient return from that business or if we would get a better return by doing something else.'

Hooray, let's hope this will see an end to hours of mind-numbing rubbish and the return of something more befitting a mainstream channel. This sort of uninspired bland television deserves to make financial losses.

They could always resort to the annoying shopping advertising, effectively a channel shutdown as the very long ads run continuous for a few hours. I can't recall if ITV2 do this already however if they got rid of the ITVPlay slot I wouldn't put it past them replacing it which such programming. After all presumably the channel owners which show it make some money and they're not paying to show programmes (even if they are overseas imports).

Hopefully this doesn't signal a return of repeats of Darmah & Greg, etc.

I really do wonder how long it will be until ITV Plc are bought out and the name is banished for ever, five years, ten years?

I hope ITV Play is axed. A return to something like this overnight - http://tvlistings.thetvroomplus.com/listing-1128.html - would be most welcome. Smile

Yeah some guy on DS said this but then another poster said that ofcom only allow 3/4 hours a night max. Dunno if this is every channel or just the main ones

All well and good for those like you who'd like to see a return to such times, but what about those who don't or can't sleep at night? Are they not entitled to watch something?

if it's BBC4, a test card, Pages from Ceefax or the News 24/World simulcast then yes. Otherwise no.
