ITV's quiz channel on Freeview no. 31 (March 2006)

As much as I hate these channels, I'd much rather see them get a dedicated channel than erode the schedules of non-quiz channels.

I do think the slot on ITV2 especially is unneccesary, and while some of the crap ITV1 overnight fillers are not missed, it has meant the end of late movies etc.

It's most annoying though how these type of channels are slowly taking over other channels.

FTN's Quiz Night Live is the most annoying - yes, FTN isn't the best channel and full of repeats, but I always felt that the 10pm-1am slot was kind of it's prime slot, and is now just full of pathetic quizzes.

Apparantly all the EMAP channels, including The Hits, now have a quiz thing on overnight too.

Also at least ITV Play sounds more interesting than most other quiz channels. They seem to be planning various different shows rather than just a blonde girl standing there asking 'Count the Numbers' all day every day

Hold on a minute.

Brian Dowling?

Are they really that desperate? I'm sure there are hundreds, if not thousands, if not about 60 million people who'd be better.

I quite like it - although I'm not convinced the bent 'p' works.

To me the bent p makes the play part resemble a games console controller, a bit like this:

In which case, very nice!

I think you'll find its ment to look like a space invader.

Flaw #1: M&M is a 18-hour channel, ITV4 is a 12-hour channel (with much of the last 4 hours 2am-6am taken up by Time Life etc). So what's guna go? What's going to stay? How much of ITV4's lame-ass schedule will survive? Will we lose Champions, Randall&Hopkirk etc.?

Flaw #2: The bubble will soon burst on these quiz channels - they are a short-term fad that will be gone / dying within a few years. ITV Play is not a solid investment of time and money.

Flaw #3: No-one wants another quiz channel on Freeview. ITV is in effect ignoring the will of its viewers in favour of lining its own pockets. OK they've been doing that ever since they raped and murdered regional identity but still....

Another channel to delete from my box's line up, currently making it EIGHT (UKTVBI, Bid TV, Price Drop, QVC, Ideal World, Quiz Call, BBC Parliament, ITV Play). Sure Freeview offers you 30+ channels, but a good proportion you wouldn't touch with a barge pole. For a limited bandwidth service this is appalling.

I suppose the idea came about after the success of Quizmaia on ITV emerged.

FTN is rubbish nowadays. It used to be all about showcasing the best programmes from Challenge, Bravo, Living TV and Trouble. It used to be all about constant repeats of Sin Cities (or Grub Smith overload), Soap Addicts, Cruel Winter/Summer, Bob and Margaret, Tonight with Jay Leno - those have all gone now in favour of this trashy quiz from 10 til 1am. That blonde woman is completely talentless, it makes me wanna scream!

I honestly don't know why FTN even exists anymore considering its all just Quiz Night Live and Thomas Cook TV! - Oh with the possible exception of ONE episode of Most Haunted or Street Crime UK sandwiched between. Rolling Eyes

All this and not to mention the sneaky 2 hour quiz on Men and Motors each day between 4 to 6pm.

There is a brief video of ITV Play in the ITV Final Results 2005 webcast / podcast on www.itvplc.com under New revenue streams (2).

There is some ITV Play pres on there.

Men & Motors is leaving Freeview to make room for it. Sad

I happened to flick onto 'Cash Call' on The Hits last night (hosted by the woman who looks like Kate Lawler). Its a shame EMAP have also taken on the quiz show trend. I reckon by next year, all overnight broadcasting will consist of this. Rolling Eyes

Quizmania or Gregglesmania Very Happy will do just fine thanks.

I reckon you're right. At the rate that they're going. I still find that i only watch Quizmania. I've no interest in taking part, I just thing it's entertaining, at least they try to be different rather than them just sitting there not doing anything. It's the sort of thing i want when I get in from work.
