I saw, on more than one occasion, YTV and Tyne Tees (via Granada) showing what appeared to be the same bulletin, a minute or so apart, overlapping each other.
So unless one was on a time delay (something I'm not even sure was possible in 1989), one or the other must have been taped.
Granada's showings of the news always seemed to have lots of dropout as well, as if they were recorded on worn-out tape.
I'm also fairly certain that there is a clip somewhere online of Denis Tuohy in the 2000- set where the bulletin rewinds on air. It was replaced by a breakdown slide and then rejoined the bulletin part-way through.
Typically I can't find the video now to corroborate my statement - but I'm sure I haven't dreamed it!!
Speaking of pre-recorded Nighttime stuff, going by the CA, I always assumed the continuity was pre-recorded in this era.
But unless they left in a slip of the tongue to give the illusion of authenticity, it seems that wasn't always the case:
I always used the enjoy the OTT blatantly-recorded announcement into the overnight news back in the spinning hearts era (and presumably just in the GMG regions).

Thames was always live. Lwt never paid anyone let alone pre recorded ca. Granada feed was also live. Scottish was live up until 3am then it was pre recorded.
Post 1995 I get the feeling meridian feed wasn't live.

Or the announcer was in a rush and couldn't be bothered to re-record it. She does sound very live, and lively!

Westcountry didn't have any announcements overnight either, just long clean idents, their playout came from HTV so presumably they did the same.
Incidently if I remember correctly Westcountry only had one announcer shift a day, roughly 12-12 with the morning recorded the night before

I believe in that era they were live during the week and pre-recorded, with the same ones used all the time, during the weekend. This was in all regions that took the Carlton/LWT service which by that stage was everyone except STV I think.
I think the live announcers during the week all used the proper 'lines' form up ITV1 ident, and the recorded weekend idents was always the already formed up ITV1 ident.

What years are you talking about? 1993-xmas 1995 there took Granada feed, from jan 1996 there took Med feed.

When I lived down that way, so late 90's. They might have had the same programmes as Granada or Meridian but the junctions were Westcountry branded. It was all fairly slow and loose - the idents went on fairly long and there were frequent 'Westcountry Life' fillers too. Their schedule was shared with HTV Wales where their playout came from, I don't know if their junctions were similar
Can't find anything on YouTube but I had some on tape somewhere, though whether I digitised when I had a sort out of my VHSs I can't remember

I've managed to locate the video file - it's on MHP Private Parts, file number 1571. Take a look at that - a spectacular cock-up showing that the news was clearly on videotape!!
