I just noticed my local Anglia News (West) is in widescreen. Normally it's only widescreen in GMTV. The studio cameras are being cropped from 4:3 to 14:9 but the graphics and most footage is in 14:9.

Granada News is also now widescreen on DSAT but still 4:3 (as opposed to 14:9) on analogue.

There is also a larger black bar on the right of my tv than the left.
Is everyone's like this or is it just my telly?

Its the same on myne, not much but is bigger. The Evening news was in 14:9 tonight and its surprising how much more you see at the sides, as you see right to the end of picture, as the TV usually cuts it off.

But what's the point of this, you lose top and bottom and the picture resolution is reduced as it's zoomed up.
