What I understand - and I could be wrong - is that they see this ITV News revamp/relaunch as a chance to launch a new programme fixed at 10:30. Probably something different to the main ITV News bulletins.
So I dont think the question is should they relaunch News at Ten, it's a matter of when - and what it will be called.

Don't you like intelligent News dear? BBC and Sky provide a much superior service, but it's not ITN's fault, it's just ITV for putting all that tabloid crap on (e.g Celebrity news and Scandal). Yes on GMTV, no on ITV News. Hopefully the revamp will shelve the 'And Finally...' section at the end with any old rubbish put in, and replace all that with Proper News and Analysis. Either that or go to Local News for an update...

Yes. As long as it is at 10 EXACTLY! (not 10:04 or something).
ITV's news is better than BBC's because it isn't so Political. BBC tend to go to their reporter at the end of every story where as ITV don't, which is good.

The problem with the News At Ten we have at the moment is just that it is another ITV News bulletin, or basically a shortened crappier version of the Evening News, which shares the same team, studio, music, graphics etc.
The timing for me for the programme doesn't bother me, but it's the problem that News At Ten isn't independent from the other ITV News bulletins as it used to be, the version we have doesn't have that serious edge to it which made NAT stand out and be very entertaining too. But this version is crap and it is no wonder people are switching off.
They should have stuck with the ITV Nightly News, we know people wern't watching at 11.00, but it was good and informative, plus it made use of the late slot, as they always looked at the first editions of the next days papers, as do Newsnight.
I never really got the idea why the ITC said to ITV move the News out of the 10.00 slot, then when they moved it to 11.00 they told them to move it back to 10.00. Though during 1999 and 2000 ITV had no low ratings as I think they were still more popular than BBC One at this time. Only moving the show back to 10.00 has made it worse.

There is room for both, the news doesn't have to be all doom and gloom. If showbiz and celebrity are what people are into, then why shouldn't this be reflected in news bulletins.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but BBC, Sky, ITN the lot were all covering the Britney Spears story this week.

Perhaps the most important fact is that if you put ITV News at Ten (regardless of
when
it exactly starts) against BBC One's 10 O'clock News, it will lose. And lose heavily. ITV News has very little credibility in the eyes of most of the British public whenever it is compared to the BBC. So it makes commercial sense for ITV to move away from the BBC.
[Actually I'm sure the if they were allowed, we'd see ITV News at Midnight- much rather get Club Reps in Topless Shock on at 10:30]

I would want News at Ten to relaunch with its own set, presentation team and unique style, like it had in the nineties.

To be fair (which ITV News does not do when it comes to some topics, sensationalism seems to be their new weapon) ITV News has a lot of experienced correspondents, producers and good presenters, but it is their editorial line that brings them right down. For instance, 10 years ago, ITN on ITV as it was then, was much more respected, and an equal to BBC News. Now, nearly if not all bulletins lose out to the BBC in terms of ratings, they have as you say very little credibility (I would say that this is not valid in the case of the Iraq War coverage).
I would say that ITN on ITV's place in terms of credibility and respect both in the general public, in politics and in the media industry, has been replaced by Sky News. The only thing that keeps ITV News floating is the background staff and correspondents like Nick Robinson that add some proper news to the service.

May be you're right. Do we think the general perception has gone down since renaming it the "ITV News" rather than from "ITN"?
People probably said it at the time, but I expect that co-incided with an editorial twist in the bulletins so that's what would be responsible rather than the name change...

ITN is not to blame per say, because five news and Channel 4 news are made by them. The problem is ITV dont treat their news with respect. With the BBC and five it is the backbone of their schedules. They slot the news in when they can, and insist on using the name News at Ten.
They should rename it to Nightly News, to go along side their Lunchtime, Morning, and Evening news bulletins. That way they cover their complete lack of judgement on their scheudling...

This thread is kind of pointless as it's already been decided that the late evening ITV News will be at 2230.
The most ridiculous thing about ITV's news (and there are LOTS of ridiculous things about it) is calling a bulletin that can start at any time between 2200 and 2330 "News at Ten" when it generally isn't.
Though I'm now thinking about other ridiculous things, and repeating "News at Ten" all night on the ITV News Channel is also up there at the top of the list... and so is showing live football or rugby highlights on a news channel... oh I could go on...
