I read today in the Sun that Carolyn Reynolds is planning a new Lunchtime Soap for ITV.

I think there is a gap in ITV's daytime schedule for a soap so it might be a good idea. With Trisha going the schedule could be like this;

9.25am ITV News Headlines
9.30am Quiz
10.00am I want that house/Moving Day etc
10.30am This Morning
12.30pm ITV Lunchtime News
1.00pm New Soap
1.30pm Des and Mel/Loose Women
2.30pm Regional Progs
3.00pm Regional News
3.15pm CITV
5.00pm Paul O Grady Show
6.00pm Regional News

I also remember reading a while ago that ITV were planning spin off's from some shows like Corrie and The Bill for daytime? Are those ideas still going ahead?

The spin-off thing's been doing the rounds ever since November last year. It's either Heartbeat, Emmerdale, Coronation Street or The Bill. John Whiston, head of drama at ITV1, said in January this year, "Daytime soaps need quite self-contained stories, which pushes us towards police, medical or vet stories."

Yes, but as ive not heard anything for about 9 months about the spin off idea I assumed it wasnt going ahead? Especially now we have Paul O Grady at 5pm.

Unless this new soap they mention in the sun is a spin off?

And Owan, yes I suppose having a soap at 12noon would avoid them having to move Des and Mel to 1.30pm Very Happy

Though of course Paul O Grady won't always be there, I think the run goes from mid October to December, though they could extend it as they did with the original series of Desl & Mel if it is successful.

And Des & Mel were at 1:30 during the IRAQ war, when the lunchtime news was extended to an hour, so it wouldn't be that difficult, but's it's nice to have it starting on the hour, after the news, and a soap would fill a gap if they were to move this morning so that it actually ALL runs within the morning.

This comes up on occasion, it depends on how relevant the topic becomes when discussing ITV in whatever form, especially on a site like Media Guardian so it wasn't always going to be discussed.

As I say, the spin-off idea's been tooted ever since November last year but no news doesn't mean its been scrapped entirely. I mean Crossroads and Night & Day were both commissioned initially on August 30th 2000. Xroads didn't arrive on screen until March the following year, N&D six months after that (the fact that both shows only lasted 18 months is rather beside the point).

Thats true, but ITV commissioned Crossroads within 5 months of the idea first being thought of, and there was lots of news about casting and filming of Crossroads in the press between Sept 2000 and March 2001.

I would have thought if ITV were going ahead with this idea they would have commisioned it by now. Now there are rumours about a lunchtime soap so they may have decided to go for a lunchtime soap rather than a teatime one.

Well we are talking about ITV, I mean nothing is straightforward with them is it? Smile Sometimes its like one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.
