Good point about prime time news.
The regulations used to be that they had to have half an hour of national news in prime time.
'Prime time' was defined from 6.30pm. I think it was till 10.30pm, but I could be wrong.
I'm sure it was from 6.30pm.
Of course, now that News at Ten(ish, most of the time) is back, ITV might have more of a case for moving the 6.30 news forward in the schedule.
5.45pm is very early, though. I suspect that most people here do not work. And certainly do not leave work at 5.30pm, which a lot of us do.
5.30pm would be madness gone mad. Its audience would dwindle big time. This would be particularly marked in London, where it takes so long for many commuters to get home.
ITV1's half-hour news programme has to be in prime time for any pretence of public sector broadcasting to be maintained. Its news audiences have fallen badly enough over the years.
My preferred remedy would be the restoration of News at Ten (really at ten and five days a week), although a News at Nine (allowing uninterrupted films from 9.30 or 9.40 after regional news) would be acceptable too.
As for ITV1 getting a new look, I thought that that was a deffo sometime in the first couple of months of 2002.

i think the current schedule isnt flexible enough - i think the regions should be able to choose when to put their local news, as was the case before the 6.30 news was introduced.
central news worked very well at 6.25 as some people like to watch the bbc's national news at 6, then central news at 6.25. but at the moment people watch the bbc's news at 6 - and then keep watching bbc for the regional news.

Possible changes to ITV1 in 2002
1. Drop the Monday episode of Crossroads.
2. Drop the Monday and Friday episodes of Emmerdale.
3. Drop the Sunday episode of Coronation Street
This would leave 3 quality episodes a week of the ITV1 soap rather than the 4-5 we get now, which has seen a drop in quality.
This would then allow Crossroads to get a primetime omnibus a la Night and Day in that the material could be cut to leave a 1 hour version which could be shown on a Monday evening 9-10PM.
Crossroads improves in quality, gets more viewers, and everybody's happy!
5PM, 5:30PM and 7PM M and F would ALL be regional!
And the news stays at 6.30

Isn't that what they are saying with ITN?
Spot the difference...
ITN: Independent Television News
ITV News: Independent TeleVision News
On a slightly different note, do you think Trading Standards should get involved with the title of ITV? It's hardly Independent anymore, is it?

Will 2002 be the time when news reporters at the end of their reports stop saying 'Peter Jones, ITN, ...' and start saying 'Peter Jones, ITV News, ...'
