ITV have decided that the brand does not best reflect the programming on the channels. This is why the re-brand is happening.
I think the rebrand is more because ITV1 doesn't reflect the programming, hence why they're changing the name. I think the other three channels work well.
They can spin out all the reasons they like but frankly I think it's just a case of the time came when all channels were in need of a refresh so ITV have decided to go the whole hog and revamp anything that isn't nailed down.
Any news to see if the itv weather graphics will be re vamped tomorrow?
They're basically unreadable!
As ITN have updated channel 4 and channel 5 weather graphics already, do you not think it's about time they change them to be more modern.

Are Sky, Freeview, Virgin etc changing the name on their EPGs tomorrow to reflect the new branding? Wonder if they'll put it into lower case or keep it in upper case and whether (in the case of Sky) they'll keep the regional names on there?

Well we have itv lowercase now, yet still on EPG's we have ITV1. Be interesting to see though if things like logos get changed quickly on TiVo etc. I take it the old logos are still in things like this weeks Radio Times / TV mags etc.
And when will all the logos get switched on itv.com ?
Also - there was some talk over ITV Player adopting the 'mother brand' - and I recall there was some confusion as to whether that would mean being called "ITV" or just using the corporate logo... had a thought on that - maybe it means like when you go on the Sky box for VOD, and you've got logos for iPlayer, Demand 5, rather than ITV Player as it is now - it'd just be ITV. Makes sending people to watch stuff on the website a bit harder to signpost linguistically maybe? Could work. Might not. Like the numbers, I think there's no clear way. Suppose there's an element of 'why make on demand stuff -sound- separate from the rest of ITV, it should be part of it'...
If youre on any of these on demand services, whether it be online, on an iPad or on tv, all you really need is the name ITV to tell you what it is. If anything, by not giving it its own branding, it's kind of acknowledging that on demand is the norm these days.

I don't see how removing the numeral makes the channel more representative of its programming.
However, I think it will add to confusion: it won't be clear from promos which channel a programme is going to be broadcast on. When they say ". . . on ITV . . ." do they mean the network as a whole, the ITV Player or one or more of their channels?
I don't know how the '1' isn't representative of their programming. A majority of their high profile shows launched when the channel was ITV1, so the name ITV1 is associated with those shows. Nevertheless, I still think ITV is a better name.

It's been lower case since 1999, so why would they change it now?

ITN have nothing to do with ITV Weather.
I just assumed they did
They certainly did when it started in the late eighties.
ITV put 90% of their new programming on ITV1 (+- a trivial percentage). ITV2 is all daytime nonsense, some of which I enjoy from time to time, or the satellite programming for ITV's reality shows.
ITV 3 and 4 are niche repeat channels.
In my view there's never any question where their first run stuff is going to go. If they say "on ITV" it's most likely to be in their primary channel, and most of their audience understand that.
Unlike the BBC, where first fun programming is as likely to be on 1, 2, 3 or 4, depending on its content.

Which, of course, is where people will look first of all. However, if it
is
your primary channel, then why not call it ITV1, especially if you've numbered the rest of your channels (with the exception of the Children's channel)?
