does anybody think that dropping the 1 from itv1 is actually a mistake and within in a couple of years it will be reversed?

I agree that it's a mistake, as we seem to have reached a point now where the majority of people are calling it ITV1 (both on and off screen), and fewer people are calling it ITV, and I expect that people will still continue to call it ITV1 for years after the rebrand.

People I associate with tend to say 'ITV' more than ITV1 (perhaps a lazy way) but from what I've noticed its interchangeable...

I think removing the '1' is a good thing, hopefully ITV will break away from the numbering system in a few years and reorganise all of the channels, with 4 being solely for Sportand being called then 'ITV Sport Channel', 3 taking all of 4's other programming, 2 staying as the 'lighter' style that it is and itv(1) staying as the main network

I'd say anything does change in future it's more likely to be the multichannels' identities.

I have been thinking this too. For example, ITV3 could become "ITV Gold" or "ITV Drama" or some such thing. I'm at a loss as to what names of that ilk could be adopted by 2 and 4 though.

itv
itv extra (would have used "plus" but that would have been even more confusing with itv+1)
itv gold
itv action

I can actually see that working.

Renaming the other ITV channels would be stupid and pointless and isn't going to happen. The only reason why they are dropping the 1 is because, generally, most people still refer to the channel as 'ITV' (assuming they're not still calling it by its regional name). The multichannels are well established and successful with their current names and target audiences and they're not going to risk messing that up.

I agree. Most companies that own multichannels eventually work out that they sell better if they have their own unique identities. Not just the obvious UKTV, but remember how uniform Granada Sky Broadcasting's channels were before they settled into their own personalities.

Maybe ITV Plc will eventually buy out UTV and we'll have Talksport TV...

Given it was ITV, then ITV1 and now back to being ITV again, I don't think anybody on this forum is qualified to say what may or may not happen in future. (Unless you're secretly Rufus Radcliffe).

Is it still common in regional newspapers to refer to ITV1 by their franchisee name? I know the Eastern Daily Press has listings for 'ITV1/Anglia', and on the back page the prime time summary only mentions 'Anglia'.

However they can have personalities through numbers - ITV2 for instance, people know pretty much what they're gonna get from that - I'd say it's pretty clear. BBC's digital channels are currently numbered after being names before, no? Unlike many of the UKTV channels now, it looks like the extra ITV channels are more defined by demographics than a single genre - like ITV4, that's sport and classics. You come up with a word to encapsulate that, you detract from the 'ITV' bit - which while UKTV channels can live alone, I don't think that's in ITV's best interest.

Making them more distinctive by name has positives and benefits - cos you've also got to balance the 'family', the main brand - which is why I see some logic from going with ITV for the main channel.

Also - there was some talk over ITV Player adopting the 'mother brand' - and I recall there was some confusion as to whether that would mean being called "ITV" or just using the corporate logo... had a thought on that - maybe it means like when you go on the Sky box for VOD, and you've got logos for iPlayer, Demand 5, rather than ITV Player as it is now - it'd just be ITV. Makes sending people to watch stuff on the website a bit harder to signpost linguistically maybe? Could work. Might not. Like the numbers, I think there's no clear way. Suppose there's an element of 'why make on demand stuff -sound- separate from the rest of ITV, it should be part of it'...

I know you may not like what I have to say but...
Why not rename some of the channels like this?

ITV1- ITV
ITV2- ITV REALITY
ITV3- ITV CLASSICS
ITV4- ITV COMEDY
CITV- ITV KIDS

I would rename the channels in the style of UKTV with itv 4 becoming itv comedy like Dave with more comedies and sport with less old dramas.
Itv3 becoming a classics channel which it basically is now but with programs having a more regular timeslot.
Itv2 becoming itv reality focusing more on reality and celebrities.
itv1 becomes itv and stays the same.
citv becoming itv kids but stays the same.

Let's read that one back to ourselves...
